And he was with them hid in the house of God six years: and Athaliah reigned over the land.
The analysis reads the King James wording.
King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The verse makes concealment and reign simultaneous: visible domination can occupy the land without possessing every life within it.
THE MEANING
A life can remain protected and real while hidden, even as hostile power seems to fill the whole landscape. What is kept out of sight remains present through the full stretch of a reign.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that whatever is unseen has been lost, or that the power dominating the visible world has the final claim.
THE ROOT
מִתְחַבֵּא
mitḥabbēʾ
GROWS FROM
חבא
ḥ-b-ʾ
Hide oneself; conceal.
“hid” in this verse is mitḥabbēʾ. The form here describes someone hiding himself, so concealment is an active state, not absence. The same root can describe one person concealing others or a place that shelters what is hidden.
ALSO GROWS
wayyaḥbîʾēm: And he hid them.
וַיַּחְבִּיאֵם
The same root describes Obadiah hiding the prophets in 1 Kings 18:4, making concealment an act that preserves lives under threat.
maḥăbēʾ: Hiding place; shelter.
מַחֲבֵא
This noun carries the root into a place of refuge, illuminating the house of God as the setting where the child remains concealed.
מֹלֶכֶת
mōleḵeṯ
GROWS FROM
מלך
m-l-k
Rule as king; reign.
“reigned” in this verse is mōleḵeṯ. The root joins the act of reigning to words for king and kingdom. The verse sets Athaliah’s public rule alongside the child’s hidden life: her reign occupies the land, but its visibility does not reveal everything the land contains.
ALSO GROWS
meleḵ: King.
מֶלֶךְ
The ruler’s title grows from the same root as the verb describing her reign.
mamlāḵāh: Kingdom; realm.
מַמְלָכָה
The root extends from the act of rule to the domain under it, sharpening the contrast between rule over the land and the hidden life within it.
THE PATTERN
A threatened life can be preserved out of sight while hostile power publicly occupies the land.
For it was so, when Jezebel cut off the prophets of the LORD, that Obadiah took an hundred prophets, and hid them by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water.)And when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him.THE THREAD
For it was so, when Jezebel cut off the prophets of the LORD, that Obadiah took an hundred prophets, and hid them by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water.)“Hid” in both verses comes from חבא (ḥ-b-ʾ), the root for hiding or concealing. In one, a child survives inside the house of God; in the other, a hundred prophets survive in a cave, concealment shelters life while a ruler threatens it.
