What Does 2 Chronicles 23:7 Mean in the King James?
And the Levites shall compass the king round about, every man with his weapons in his hand; and whosoever else cometh into the house, he shall be put to death: but be ye with the king when he cometh in, and when he goeth out.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The Hebrew doubles the circle, “encircle the king round about”, so protection becomes a complete human boundary, enforced by lethal force at the threshold.
THE MEANING
Here, armed guards ring the king as he moves, and anyone who enters the house is put to death. Protection is inseparable from a boundary whose crossing carries a lethal consequence.
THE ROOT
יַקִּיפוּ
yaqqifu
GROWS FROM
נָקַף
naqaph
To go around, encircle, or round off.
“compass” in this verse is yaqqifu. The verse uses נָקַף (naqaph, encircle) for the guards’ action, then adds סָבִיב (saviv, around), piling a second circle-word onto the first. The king’s protection is pictured as a ring made of armed bodies.
ALSO GROWS
yaqqifu: They shall encircle.
יַקִּיפוּ
This is the form naming the guards’ action around the king.
taqqifu: You shall round off or encircle.
תַּקִּפוּ
In Leviticus 19:27, the same root describes rounding the corners of the head, giving the root a concrete sense of shaping a boundary.
סָבִיב
saviv
GROWS FROM
סָבַב
sabab
To turn, go around, or surround.
“round about” in this verse is saviv. This word names the circumference around the king and echoes the verb for encircling. Two distinct Hebrew roots converge on the same image: a boundary all around him.
ALSO GROWS
savav: To turn or go around.
סָבַב
The verb makes the circular movement inside סָבִיב (saviv) visible.
sevivav: Around him; his surroundings.
סְבִיבָיו
Psalm 97:2 uses this form for what surrounds a presence, extending the same spatial image beyond the guarded king.
מֶלֶךְ
melekh
GROWS FROM
מָלַךְ
malakh
To reign or rule.
The root family joins the king to the act of reigning and to the realm governed. The guards’ ring surrounds both a person and the continuity of rule he represents.
ALSO GROWS
malakh: To reign or become king.
מָלַךְ
It connects the king’s title to the act of rule that the guard formation protects.
mamlakhah: Kingdom or realm.
מַמְלָכָה
The same root extends from the ruler to the territory and order under his rule.
THE PATTERN
Protection is enacted by controlling thresholds and guarding the movement through them.
And they lodged round about the house of God, because the charge was upon them, and the opening thereof every morning pertained to them. And I said unto them, Let not the gates of Jerusalem be opened until the sun be hot; and while they stand by, let them shut the doors, and bar them: and appoint watches of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, every one in his watch, and every one to be over against his house.I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.THE THREAD
The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore. Both verses pair בּוֹא (bo, come in) with יָצָא (yatsa, go out), the same two Hebrew roots behind the king’s coming in and going out here and the psalm’s coming and going. This verse places armed guards around that passage; the psalm extends preservation across every going out and coming in.
