This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

Joash’s refusal to remember faithful love does not erase the bloodshed: Zechariah’s last plea asks the LORD to seek it out.

The verse holds betrayal in front of the reader now: received faithful love can be denied, and violence can turn against the giver’s child. The dying voice names the killing plainly and places its claim before the LORD, who sees and seeks an account. What power refuses to remember remains in view.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that refusing to remember the good owed, or killing its witness, makes the harm disappear.

וְיִדְרֹשׁ

weyidrōsh

GROWS FROM

דרש

darash

To seek, inquire into, or pursue a matter; in some contexts, to require or demand.

“require” in this verse is weyidrōsh. The LORD is asked not merely to notice the killing, but to pursue it for account. The verb holds seeking and requiring together, making the plea active: the violence is brought into the open and pursued.

ALSO GROWS

dōrēsh: One who seeks or inquires

דֹּרֵשׁ

This form makes the pursuit in Zechariah’s plea vivid: the matter is sought out.

midrāsh: Inquiry or exposition

מִדְרָשׁ

This word carries the same seed of careful seeking, echoing the demand that the killing be examined.

וַיִּזְכֹּר

wayyizkōr

GROWS FROM

זכר

zakar

To remember, call to mind, or mention.

“remembered” in this verse is wayyizkōr. The king’s failure is described with a word that can mean both remembering and bringing something to mind or naming it. Against that refusal, the closing plea uses darash: what the king will not keep in view is pursued for account.

ALSO GROWS

zikkārōn: Remembrance or memorial

זִכָּרוֹן

A memorial keeps something present in mind, the opposite of the king’s refusal to remember.

hizkīr: To mention or bring to remembrance

הִזְכִּיר

This form shows that remembering can involve naming something; the king’s failure is more than a passing lapse.

הַחֶסֶד

ha-ḥesed

GROWS FROM

חסד

ḥesed

Faithful, steadfast love expressed through action.

“kindness” in this verse is ha-ḥesed. The word is chesed, faithful love: enduring loyalty made visible in what someone does. Joash’s violence stands against the love Jehoiada had shown him, giving the betrayal its full weight.

ALSO GROWS

ḥāsad: To act loyally or show kindness

חָסַד

This verb presents faithful love as something enacted, matching the good Jehoiada did for Joash.

ḥāsîd: A faithful or loyal person

חָסִיד

This related word describes a person through the same quality of loyalty that the king refuses to remember.

Violence concealed by the powerful remains visible to God and is pursued for account.

Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against the shepherds; and I will require my flock at their hand, and cause them to cease from feeding the flock; neither shall the shepherds feed themselves any more; for I will deliver my flock from their mouth, that they may not be meat for them.
Ezekiel 34:10 · KJVThe LORD seeks an account from those who use their power to harm the flock entrusted to them.
That the blood of all the prophets, which was shed from the foundation of the world, may be required of this generation;
Luke 11:50 · KJVThe blood of those killed is not erased by the passage of time; it is brought forward for account.
And surely your blood of your lives will I require; at the hand of every beast will I require it, and at the hand of man; at the hand of every man’s brother will I require the life of man.
Genesis 9:5 · KJVThe same language of requiring names bloodshed as something God actively seeks out.
And surely your blood of your lives will I require; at the hand of every beast will I require it, and at the hand of man; at the hand of every man’s brother will I require the life of man.
Genesis 9:5 · KJV

Genesis uses the same Hebrew root ⁨דרש⁩ (darash, seek, inquire, require) when God says blood will be required. Zechariah’s plea echoes that language: the killing is pursued for account, not erased by the killer’s silence.
