What Does 2 Chronicles 28:23 Mean in the King James?

For he sacrificed unto the gods of Damascus, which smote him: and he said, Because the gods of the kings of Syria help them, therefore will I sacrifice to them, that they may help me. But they were the ruin of him, and of all Israel.

This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

The mind can mistake the power that strikes it for the power that will help it, until its supposed helper becomes its stumbling block.

The verse names an inward turn from injury to allegiance: the one who has been struck treats the striker’s power as proof that it can sustain him. The presumed help becomes a force that makes him stumble, and the harm spreads to a whole community.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The lie it undoes is that the power that wounds me must be able to help me.

עָזַר

ʿāzar

GROWS FROM

עזר

To help, support, or come to someone’s aid.

The same Hebrew root repeats as the kings’ gods supposedly help them and as the help Ahaz expects for himself. The verse then turns from ⁨עזר⁩ (ʿ-z-r, help) to ⁨כשל⁩ (k-sh-l, stumble): the outcome exposes what this supposed help produces.

ALSO GROWS

ʿēzer: Help or helper.

עֵזֶר

Psalm 121:2 uses this noun for help that comes from the LORD, showing that the root’s meaning stays constant while its source changes.

ʿezrah: Help or assistance.

עֶזְרָה

This noun carries the same idea of aid, sharpening the verse’s question: what actually supports a person, and what only appears to?

לְהַכְשִׁילוֹ

lehakshilo

GROWS FROM

כשל

To stumble, stagger, or fall; in a causative form, to make someone stumble.

The phrase translated “were the ruin of him” literally says they were there to make him stumble. The supposed helpers are named by the fall they cause, turning ruin from an abstract disaster into the consequence of following what cannot sustain him.

ALSO GROWS

kāshal: To stumble or fall.

כָּשַׁל

This is the basic action behind the verse’s “ruin”: the harm takes the form of a fall.

mikshol: A stumbling block or obstacle.

מִכְשׁוֹל

This related noun shows how what is followed as support can become the obstacle that trips a person.

A power mistaken for a source of help can deepen the harm that drove a person to it.

Thus saith the LORD; Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the LORD.
Jeremiah 17:5 · KJVThe verse shows trust placed in human strength turning into a source of loss.
For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.
Jeremiah 2:13 · KJVWhat is chosen to supply life proves unable to hold what the person needs.
But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition.
1 Timothy 6:9 · KJVThe pursuit of wealth as security becomes a snare that carries people into destruction.
My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth.
Psalm 121:2 · KJV

The Hebrew word ⁨עֵזֶר⁩ (ʿēzer, help) in this verse shares the ⁨עזר⁩ (ʿ-z-r) root with the repeated “help” in 2 Chronicles 28:23. Psalm 121 names a different source for that same help, directing attention to what truly sustains rather than what merely appears powerful.
