What Does 2 Chronicles 32:26 Mean in the King James?
Notwithstanding Hezekiah humbled himself for the pride of his heart, both he and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the wrath of the LORD came not upon them in the days of Hezekiah.

THE KEY
The heart’s height is lowered before the LORD’s anger comes down upon יְרוּשָׁלַיִם (Yerushalayim, the twofold wholeness of שָׁלוֹם (shalom, wholeness)).
THE MEANING
Your heart’s height can be lowered; the verse places חִזְקִיָּהוּ (Chizqiyyahu, “Yah strengthens”) and יְרוּשָׁלַיִם (Yerushalayim, the twofold wholeness of שָׁלוֹם (shalom, wholeness)) together. An inward humbling stands beside a shared consequence: the LORD’s anger does not come upon them. Wrath remains real and explicit, but its arrival is withheld.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that once pride rises, wrath must follow: here the heart is humbled, and the LORD’s anger does not arrive.
THE ROOT
גֹּבַהּ
gōbah
GROWS FROM
גבה
g-b-h
To be high or rise.
The English “pride” carries a literal vertical image here: the phrase is the height of his heart. The same root describes what stands high and what is raised, so pride is an elevation capable of being lowered.
ALSO GROWS
gāvoah: High, lofty, or tall.
גָּבֹהַּ
This branch makes the height in the heart concrete: pride carries the shape of something raised.
higbiah: To raise or lift up.
הִגְבִּיהַּ
The root also names the act of raising, clarifying the reversal when the heart’s elevation is brought low.
וַיִּכָּנַע
vayikkānaʿ
GROWS FROM
כנע
k-n-ʿ
To be subdued or brought low; to humble.
“humbled himself” in this verse is vayikkānaʿ. This root gives humbling the force of becoming subdued, not merely feeling modest. Beside גֹּבַהּ (gōbah, height), it makes the passage’s movement plain: the heart is brought down, and wrath does not come upon the community.
ALSO GROWS
nikhnāʿ: To be humbled or subdued.
נִכְנַע
This form shows the inward lowering as a changed state, the movement named in the verse.
hikhniʿa: To subdue or bring low.
הִכְנִיעַ
This active form reveals the downward movement contained in humbling.
THE PATTERN
When the heart lowers itself before the LORD, threatened consequence gives way to restraint and restoration.
If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.THE THREAD
Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall. Here “pride” is גֹּבַהּ (gōbah, height), and the same word appears in Proverbs 16:18 in the phrase “haughty spirit.” Proverbs places that height before a fall; Chronicles shows the heart’s height lowered and the LORD’s anger withheld.
