What Does 2 Chronicles 36:23 Mean in the King James?
Thus saith Cyrus king of Persia, All the kingdoms of the earth hath the LORD God of heaven given me; and he hath charged me to build him an house in Jerusalem, which is in Judah. Who is there among you of all his people? The LORD his God be with him, and let him go up.

THE KEY
The verse makes return an ascent: authority received from God opens a path from constriction toward the wholeness named by Jerusalem.
THE MEANING
Power appears here as received from the LORD and turned toward rebuilding a dwelling for him. The invitation addresses you now: anyone among God’s people may go up with the LORD alongside. Jerusalem (יְרוּשָׁלַיִם, Yerushalayim) carries שָׁלוֹם (shalom, wholeness) in its dual ending, so the journey opens from displacement toward wholeness.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie that displacement is final, that no path back to a dwelling with God is open, is undone by the invitation to go up with God alongside the traveler.
THE ROOT
וְיָעַל
wə-yāʿal
GROWS FROM
עלה
Rise, ascend, go up.
“go up” in this verse is wə-yāʿal. English “go” can sound like ordinary travel; עלה carries the sense of rising. The call to return is already a movement upward, out of constriction and toward wholeness.
ALSO GROWS
aliyah: Ascent; going up.
עֲלִיָּה
It makes the verse’s invitation an upward movement, not simply a change of location.
olah: A burnt offering, that which goes up.
עֹלָה
This branch carries ascent into sacred movement, echoing the invitation to approach a dwelling set apart for God.
נָתַן
natan
GROWS FROM
נתן
Give, set, place.
“given” in this verse is natan. The kingdoms are presented as placed into Cyrus’s hands, rather than originating with him. The authority used to rebuild is itself received.
ALSO GROWS
mattanah: Gift.
מַתָּנָה
It reveals the received quality of the authority that makes rebuilding possible.
netinah: Giving; a grant or donation.
נְתִינָה
It echoes the act of placing something into another’s hands, as the verse describes the kingdoms being given.
לִבְנוֹת
livnot
GROWS FROM
בנה
Build, establish.
“build” in this verse is livnot. The root connects building with establishing a structure that can hold a dwelling. Here the task is not only construction: it restores a place for the LORD’s presence.
ALSO GROWS
mivneh: Structure; building.
מִבְנֶה
It makes visible the structure implied by the command to build a house.
binyan: Building; construction.
בִּנְיָן
It echoes the act of establishing a dwelling where presence can be encountered.
THE PATTERN
The way back to God’s dwelling opens through ascent, and the house takes form through God’s presence.
And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.A Song of degrees for Solomon. Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord:THE THREAD
And God said unto Jacob, Arise, go up to Beth-el, and dwell there: and make there an altar unto God, that appeared unto thee when thou fleddest from the face of Esau thy brother. Both verses use עָלָה (ʿalah, rise or go up) for movement toward a place of dwelling with God. In Genesis, the ascent leads to Bethel (בֵּית־אֵל, Beit-El, house of God) and an altar; here, it leads to rebuilding the house in Jerusalem.
