What Does 2 Chronicles 5:9 Mean in the King James?
And they drew out the staves of the ark, that the ends of the staves were seen from the ark before the oracle; but they were not seen without. And there it is unto this day.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The Ark’s placement in the sanctuary does not cancel its portability: its lengthened poles remain visible from within while concealed from outside.
THE MEANING
The sacred center holds more than the outward view can disclose. The poles’ ends are visible before the oracle, while remaining unseen from outside; the sign of carrying remains even in a place of rest. Presence, concealment, and movement occupy the same frame.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The verse dissolves the belief that what cannot be seen from outside is absent: the poles remain, even where the outward view cannot reach them.
THE ROOT
וַיַּאֲרִיכוּ
wayyaʾărîḵû
GROWS FROM
ארך
To be long; to lengthen.
The Hebrew verb carries the sense of lengthening, while “drew out” conveys the action. The same root names both being long and length itself, making the poles’ extended form part of the scene: their placement does not erase their capacity to carry.
ALSO GROWS
ʾārōḵ: Long.
אָרֹךְ
The poles are extended in length, not simply removed from the Ark.
ʾōreḵ: Length.
אֹרֶךְ
This branch makes the poles’ length a feature of the scene, even as their ends remain hidden from outside.
וַיֵּרָאוּ
wayyērāʾû
GROWS FROM
ראה
To see or perceive.
“seen” in this verse is wayyērāʾû. The verse uses this root for both what is visible and what is not visible. The poles do not vanish at the boundary; their visibility changes with the vantage point.
ALSO GROWS
rōʾeh: One who sees; a seer.
רֹאֶה
It makes sight a relation between what is present and the one able to see it.
marʾeh: Appearance, sight, or vision.
מַרְאֶה
The same root can name what comes into view, echoing how the poles appear from one side of the threshold but not the other.
THE PATTERN
What belongs to an inner, set-apart space can remain perceptible there while its outward face stays concealed.
The staves shall be in the rings of the ark: they shall not be taken from it.For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion: in the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me; he shall set me up upon a rock. But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.THE THREAD
And she called the name of the LORD that spake unto her, Thou God seest me: for she said, Have I also here looked after him that seeth me?“Seest” and “seen” share the Hebrew root ראה (raʾah), to see or perceive. Here the root shifts from the limits of an outward view to the assurance that what is hidden from people is still seen.
