Wherefore? because I love you not? God knoweth.

THE KEY
The question of love is answered by the One whose knowing sees beneath the accusation.
THE MEANING
When love is questioned, this verse names the painful question directly: “Is it because I do not love you?” The answer rests in God’s knowing, which sees what accusation alone cannot settle. Suspicion does not by itself prove that love is absent.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie it undoes is that being accused of lovelessness proves love is absent; God’s knowledge reaches beyond the accusation.
THE ROOT
οἶδεν
oiden
GROWS FROM
εἰδ- (eid-, from εἴδω, eidō)
See, perceive; οἶδα (oida) is historically a perfect form of εἴδω (eidō), “to see,” and means “know.”
English “knoweth” can sound like a bare verdict, but this Greek word belongs to a see-and-know family: knowing carries the sense of what is fully seen. The verse places that knowing where human suspicion cannot determine whether love is real.
ALSO GROWS
eidō: See, perceive
εἴδω
This is the verb behind the historical form of οἶδα (oida), linking knowing with having seen.
eidos: Form, appearance
εἶδος
This related word names what can be seen, echoing the verse’s deeper picture of God’s knowing as full apprehension.
THE PATTERN
God’s knowing reaches the heart beneath the outward evidence people use to judge one another.
But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart. For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things. And he said unto them, Ye are they which justify yourselves before men; but God knoweth your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God.THE THREAD
He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep. The first “knowest” in John 21:17 uses the same οἶδα (oida) family as “God knoweth” here. The verse then places that knowing directly beside a declaration of love, opening this question as something God can see through to its truth.
