Lest haply if they of Macedonia come with me, and find you unprepared, we (that we say not, ye) should be ashamed in this same confident boasting.

This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

Confidence here is an underlying footing, and the test is whether the promised readiness can actually be found.

The verse places you at the moment when public assurance meets the real condition of your readiness. The confidence being carried between people has something underneath it, and if that foundation is unprepared, shame reaches both the ones being praised and the one who trusts them. The pressure is relational: another person’s confidence rests on what is actually there.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that confident words alone make a promise secure; the words can be exposed when the reality beneath them is unprepared.

ὑποστάσει

hypostasei

GROWS FROM

στα-

sta-

To stand or set in place; ⁨ὑπόστασις⁩ (hypostasis) carries the sense of an underlying stand or support, and here means assurance or confidence.

The KJV’s “confident boasting” rests on a word that can also mean an underlying reality or support. Confidence in this verse has a footing beneath it, so the question is whether that footing holds when the people arrive.

ALSO GROWS

histēmi: To stand or set in place.

ἵστημι

This root gives assurance the image of something one can stand on.

anastasis: A standing up or rising; resurrection.

ἀνάστασις

The same stand-root names something that rises into view, echoing how the reality beneath a claim becomes visible.

ἀπαρασκευάστους

aparaskeuastous

GROWS FROM

σκευ-

skeu-

To furnish or equip; the word describes being without preparation or equipment.

“Unprepared” carries the sense of lacking what would make you ready for what is coming. Its contrast with confidence is sharp: the assurance may already be spoken, but the necessary readiness may still be missing.

ALSO GROWS

skeuos: A vessel, implement, or piece of equipment.

σκεῦος

The shared stem gives preparation a concrete feel: readiness means having what the situation requires.

paraskeuē: Preparation or readiness.

παρασκευή

This related word names preparation directly, making the gap between confidence and readiness visible.

Public assurance becomes trustworthy when something real stands underneath it.

Whoso boasteth himself of a false gift is like clouds and wind without rain.
Proverbs 25:14 · KJVThe boast promises a gift, but the empty sky shows what happens when no reality stands beneath the claim.
In whose eyes a vile person is contemned; but he honoureth them that fear the LORD. He that sweareth to his own hurt, and changeth not.
Psalm 15:4 · KJVThe spoken pledge has footing because it remains in place even when keeping it carries a cost.
Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.
James 2:17 · KJVWhat is claimed becomes visible through what is actually present and done.
Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
Hebrews 11:1 · KJV

The word translated “confident” here is ⁨ὑπόστασις⁩ (hypostasis), the same Greek noun rendered “substance” in this verse. The shared word gives confidence an underlying reality: here, the claim is exposed if the readiness beneath it is absent.
