King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The verse binds succession to combat: choosing the heir and setting him on the throne is inseparable from fighting for the house he represents.
THE MEANING
The demand is immediate: identify the good and upright among your master’s sons, set that son on his father’s throne, and fight for the master’s house. It binds judgment, enthronement, and armed defense into one act of allegiance.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
Choosing the “best” successor is a clean act, separate from the violence and allegiance required to secure his claim.
THE ROOT
וְהִלָּחֲמוּ
ve-hillachamu
GROWS FROM
ל־ח־ם
l-ḥ-m
To fight or wage war.
“fight” in this verse is ve-hillachamu. English gives one command, while Hebrew places it in a word family for combat: the same root forms מִלְחָמָה (milḥamah), “battle” or “war.” The house is defended through armed conflict, not through allegiance alone.
ALSO GROWS
milḥamah: Battle; war.
מִלְחָמָה
This noun from the same root makes the combat in the command explicit.
loḥem: One who fights; a combatant.
לֹחֵם
The command calls its hearers into the role named by this root: those who fight for the house.
בֵּית
beit
GROWS FROM
ב־י־ת
b-y-t
House or dwelling, extending to a household or lineage.
The Hebrew word can hold a dwelling and the family or lineage gathered under it. Here the “master’s house” is a household whose inheritance and claim to rule are at stake.
ALSO GROWS
bayit: House; dwelling; household.
בַּיִת
The base form carries both the physical house and the people who belong to it.
beit-av: Father’s house; family or clan.
בֵּית־אָב
This branch makes the lineage within the master’s house visible.
batim: Houses; households.
בָּתִּים
The plural form shows how the word can name households as well as buildings.
וְהַיָּשָׁר
ve-hayashar
GROWS FROM
י־ש־ר
y-sh-r
To be straight, level, or upright.
The phrase names candidates who are “good and straight.” The root gives “meetest” an image of uprightness, placing that quality alongside descent from the master’s sons.
ALSO GROWS
yashar: Straight; upright; right.
יָשָׁר
This is the word describing the suitable son among the master’s sons.
yosher: Uprightness; integrity.
יֹשֶׁר
This noun from the same root draws out the quality implied by choosing the upright candidate.
THE PATTERN
A ruler’s claim becomes visible through whom its people will fight to defend.
Be of good courage, and let us play the men for our people, and for the cities of our God: and the LORD do that which seemeth him good. And I looked, and rose up, and said unto the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, Be not ye afraid of them: remember the Lord, which is great and terrible, and fight for your brethren, your sons, and your daughters, your wives, and your houses.Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.THE THREAD
And I looked, and rose up, and said unto the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, Be not ye afraid of them: remember the Lord, which is great and terrible, and fight for your brethren, your sons, and your daughters, your wives, and your houses. Both verses use the Hebrew root ל־ח־ם (l-ḥ-m) for the command to fight. In 2 Kings the defense is for the master’s house; Nehemiah names the household members and homes within that claim, showing what the word “house” gathers inside it.
