This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

The route into the king’s house is also the route to Athaliah’s death, binding royal order to the violence that secures it.

The verse holds royal order and bodily violence in the same frame: hands are laid on Athaliah, she goes along the route by which horses enter the king’s house, and she is killed there. The royal household and the body it removes occupy the same scene.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The return of a rightful ruler does not make the violence of succession disappear.

דֶּרֶךְ

derekh

GROWS FROM

דרך

To tread or step.

Hebrew uses the same word for a physical road and a course or way of life. Here, derekh is a literal route into the royal house, but its root keeps the sense of ground made by treading beneath the English word “way.”

ALSO GROWS

darakh: To tread, step, or march.

דָּרַךְ

The road is understood through the act of moving across it; the route has been marked by passage.

derekh: A road, route, course, or way.

דֶּרֶךְ

This is the word in the verse: a concrete horse route that also carries the broader sense of a course with a destination.

וַתּוּמַת

wattumat

GROWS FROM

מות

To die.

“slain” in this verse is wattumat. The Hebrew verb means “she was put to death,” with the root for dying visible in the act itself. Its passive form names her death while leaving the agent unstated in this clause.

ALSO GROWS

māvet: Death.

מָוֶת

The noun makes explicit the outcome carried by the verb: the scene ends in death.

met: Dead; one who has died.

מֵת

This form names the state that follows the act expressed by the root in the verse.

The transfer and defense of royal power can be carried out through the capture or killing of a body.

And there came in two men, children of Belial, and sat before him: and the men of Belial witnessed against him, even against Naboth, in the presence of the people, saying, Naboth did blaspheme God and the king. Then they carried him forth out of the city, and stoned him with stones, that he died.
1 Kings 21:13 · KJVA ruler’s claim is secured through a staged accusation that ends with Naboth’s execution.
And he sent, and beheaded John in the prison.
Matthew 14:10 · KJVA royal command turns a political promise into John’s death.
And he killed James the brother of John with the sword.
Acts 12:2 · KJVHerod’s exercise of power is expressed directly through the killing of James.
For the LORD knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.
Psalm 1:6 · KJV

Both verses use ⁨דֶּרֶךְ⁩ (derekh), “way”: here it is the horse route into the king’s house, while Psalm 1:6 uses it for a person’s course. The shared word lets the literal road in this verse echo the question of where a way leads.
