THE KEY
Visibility does not decide the future: a child is concealed in the LORD’s house while Athaliah’s public reign fills the land.
THE MEANING
Life can remain concealed inside the LORD’s house while another power holds the visible rule. The six years hold both realities together: what is hidden is still present, and what reigns openly does not settle what comes next.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the assumption that what cannot be seen has been lost; here, concealment keeps the child alive while another occupies the throne.
THE ROOT
מִתְחַבֵּא
mitḥabbēʾ
GROWS FROM
חבא
to hide or conceal oneself
“hid” in this verse is mitḥabbēʾ. The Hebrew form describes an ongoing state of hiding through the six years. Its root can name hiding oneself or being hidden, holding together the act of leaving sight and the condition of remaining out of sight.
ALSO GROWS
ḥābāʾ: to hide oneself
חָבָא
This is the root’s basic action, showing that the concealment is an active part of the scene.
neḥbāʾ: hidden; having hidden oneself
נֶחְבָּא
This form appears in Saul’s hiding among the baggage, where hiddenness precedes being brought into public view.
מֹלֶכֶת
mōleḵeṯ
GROWS FROM
מלך
to rule as king
Athaliah’s ‘reign’ and the Hebrew word for ‘king’ grow from the same root: the action of ruling shares its seed with the title. The verse places public rule beside a hidden heir, holding the visible office and the hidden line in tension.
ALSO GROWS
melekh: king
מֶלֶךְ
The shared root connects Athaliah’s act of ruling with the title associated with the throne.
malkhūt: kingdom, kingship, or reign
מַלְכוּת
This branch names the realm or authority bound up with the act of ruling over the land.
THE PATTERN
What is concealed can remain held and alive until it comes into view.
Therefore they enquired of the LORD further, if the man should yet come thither. And the LORD answered, Behold, he hath hid himself among the stuff. For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion: in the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me; he shall set me up upon a rock. For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.THE THREAD
Therefore they enquired of the LORD further, if the man should yet come thither. And the LORD answered, Behold, he hath hid himself among the stuff. The same root, חבא (ḥ-b-ʾ, to hide), appears in 1 Samuel’s description of Saul hiding among the baggage. There, concealment comes before he is brought before the people; here, Joash’s concealment spans Athaliah’s reign, showing that hiddenness is not proof of absence.
