And he commanded them, saying, This is the thing that ye shall do; A third part of you that enter in on the sabbath shall even be keepers of the watch of the king’s house;

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The king’s safety rests on a watch that is itself kept: Hebrew repeats the root for guarding, turning duty into layered protection.
THE MEANING
A center entrusted to care is never protected by its importance alone; someone must keep watch. The work is divided and stationed, making protection a shared duty held through attentive presence. The verse speaks now wherever safety depends on someone maintaining the watch.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The belief this undoes is that what holds authority is secure by its status alone.
THE ROOT
שֹׁמְרֵי מִשְׁמֶרֶת
shomrê mishmeret
GROWS FROM
שׁמר
to keep, guard, or watch
“keepers of the watch” in this verse is shomrê mishmeret. The Hebrew phrase is shomrê mishmeret, “keepers of a keeping” or “guardians of the guard-duty”: both words grow from the same root, שׁמר (shamar). English preserves the idea of watchfulness, but the repeated root makes the protection sound continuous, people keep the very keeping entrusted to them.
ALSO GROWS
shomer: keeper, guardian
שֹׁמֵר
This is the person who actively holds the watch named in the verse.
mishmeret: guard-duty, watch
מִשְׁמֶרֶת
This is the entrusted keeping itself; the same root links the guardians to the duty they maintain.
THE PATTERN
Protection holds when watchfulness is assigned, shared, and maintained at the point of vulnerability.
A Song of degrees for Solomon. Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain. For the Son of man is as a man taking a far journey, who left his house, and gave authority to his servants, and to every man his work, and commanded the porter to watch.THE THREAD
The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul. The Hebrew verb behind “preserve” comes from שׁמר (shamar, “keep, guard”), the same root as the keepers of the king’s house. The keeping widens from a guarded house to the preservation of the person.
