And two parts of all you that go forth on the sabbath, even they shall keep the watch of the house of the LORD about the king.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The Hebrew repeats one root for both “keep” and “watch”: the king is guarded by people carrying out a guarding duty.
THE MEANING
Protection here takes shape as a watch around a vulnerable center: those going off Sabbath duty are assigned to guard the LORD’s house around the king. The repeated guard-language presents safety as active, shared presence rather than something guaranteed by a sacred place alone.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
A person is automatically safe simply because they are in a sacred place.
THE ROOT
וְשָׁמְרוּ
veshameru
GROWS FROM
שׁ־מ־ר
To guard, watch over, or keep.
“keep the watch” in this verse is veshameru. The words translated “keep” and “watch” both grow from שׁמר (shamar, guard). Hebrew makes the duty and the act one thing: they guard by carrying out the guard.
ALSO GROWS
mishmeret: Guard duty, watch, or charge.
מִשְׁמֶרֶת
This is the noun translated “watch”; it shares its root with the verb translated “keep.”
shomer: A keeper or watchman.
שֹׁמֵר
The word names the person who carries the same guarding root into action.
shemirah: Guarding or keeping.
שְׁמִירָה
This noun preserves the root’s sense of ongoing watch, not a single glance.
THE PATTERN
What is entrusted is preserved through active guarding around a vulnerable center.
And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.THE THREAD
And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.Genesis uses the same Hebrew root, שׁמר (shamar, guard or keep), for the human charge in Eden. Here that same root describes the watch around the king: in both verses, keeping means guarding what has been entrusted.
