What Does 2 Kings 11:8 Mean in the King James?
And ye shall compass the king round about, every man with his weapons in his hand: and he that cometh within the ranges, let him be slain: and be ye with the king as he goeth out and as he cometh in.

THE KEY
Protection here is an armed circle around the king, with death enforced at its boundary.
THE MEANING
The king stands inside an armed perimeter: each guard holds a weapon, and anyone who comes within the ranks is put to death. The guards remain with him as he goes out and comes in, sustaining that protection through every passage.
THE ROOT
וְסַבֹּתֶם
vesabbotem
GROWS FROM
סבב
To turn, go around, or encircle.
The verb וְסַבֹּתֶם (vesabbotem, “you shall surround”) is followed by סָבִיב (saviv, “all around”), repeating the circle as both action and spatial result. The English “compass ... round about” preserves the repetition; the Hebrew root makes its force plain: protection is arranged as an encirclement, and the verse names death as the boundary’s enforcement.
ALSO GROWS
saviv: Around, all around.
סָבִיב
This form appears in the verse itself, making the guards’ circling action an explicit space around the king.
sevivot: Surroundings, environs.
סְבִיבוֹת
This related form carries the same root into the space around something, clarifying that the circle is a protective arrangement, not merely movement.
THE PATTERN
Protection takes the form of an enclosing presence that guards passage through danger.
As the mountains are round about Jerusalem, so the LORD is round about his people from henceforth even for ever. And I will encamp about mine house because of the army, because of him that passeth by, and because of him that returneth: and no oppressor shall pass through them any more: for now have I seen with mine eyes. And he called unto him two centurions, saying, Make ready two hundred soldiers to go to Cæsarea, and horsemen threescore and ten, and spearmen two hundred, at the third hour of the night;THE THREAD
As the mountains are round about Jerusalem, so the LORD is round about his people from henceforth even for ever. Both verses use סָבִיב (saviv, “around”), from סבב (savav, “encircle”). In Kings the ring is made of armed guards around one king; the psalm widens the same encircling image to the LORD around a people.
