What Does 2 Kings 12:21 Mean in the King James?
For Jozachar the son of Shimeath, and Jehozabad the son of Shomer, his servants, smote him, and he died; and they buried him with his fathers in the city of David: and Amaziah his son reigned in his stead.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The king’s killers are called servants, and one is Jehozabad, son of Shomer (שֹׁמֵר, Shomer, “keeper”): service and guarding-language stand beside the act that ends the king’s life.
THE MEANING
The verse meets you where trust and power share a room: the word servant marks a role of service, but it does not guarantee that the hands within that role will protect you. A death opens a place for another, and the transfer of authority does not erase the violence that makes it possible.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie is that a title of service guarantees loyalty: the king’s own servants become his killers.
THE ROOT
עֲבָדָיו
avadav
GROWS FROM
עבד
ʿ-b-d
Work, serve, labor.
The root names the work or status of service; it does not promise loyalty. The verse makes that distinction stark: the king’s servants are the ones who strike him.
ALSO GROWS
eved: Servant, worker, or slave.
עֶבֶד
The same root describes a person’s service or status, without saying that the service is faithful.
avodah: Work, labor, or service.
עֲבוֹדָה
This branch names the activity of serving, which the verse separates from protecting the one served.
שֹׁמֵר
Shomer
GROWS FROM
שׁמר
sh-m-r
Keep, guard, watch over.
Shomer is Jehozabad’s father, and his name carries the sense of a keeper or guard. That guarding-language stands in the lineage of a man named among the king’s servants who strike him; the name sharpens the contrast but does not explain the motive.
ALSO GROWS
shamar: Keep, guard, or watch over.
שָׁמַר
This verb carries the keeping and guarding sense compressed in the name Shomer.
mishmeret: A watch, duty, or charge.
מִשְׁמֶרֶת
The branch can name a role of custody, placing the idea of guarding beside the violence in the verse.
יֹזָכָר
Yozachar
GROWS FROM
זכר
z-k-r
Remember, recall, bring to mind.
Jozachar’s name carries the sense “Yah remembers.” The verse gives no motive for the killing, so the name’s meaning stands beside the act without explaining or excusing it.
ALSO GROWS
zakar: Remember, recall, or mention.
זָכַר
This is the root sense carried in Jozachar’s name.
zikaron: Remembrance or memorial.
זִכָּרוֹן
This branch shows how the root extends from remembering into what is held in memory.
THE PATTERN
A ruler can be killed by a conspiracy that rises within the circle of power.
And Baasha the son of Ahijah, of the house of Issachar, conspired against him; and Baasha smote him at Gibbethon, which belonged to the Philistines; for Nadab and all Israel laid siege to Gibbethon. And Shallum the son of Jabesh conspired against him, and smote him before the people, and slew him, and reigned in his stead. And when they were departed from him, (for they left him in great diseases,) his own servants conspired against him for the blood of the sons of Jehoiada the priest, and slew him on his bed, and he died: and they buried him in the city of David, but they buried him not in the sepulchres of the kings.THE THREAD
I have set watchmen upon thy walls, O Jerusalem, which shall never hold their peace day nor night: ye that make mention of the LORD, keep not silence,The Hebrew word translated watchmen is שֹׁמְרִים (shomrim), from the same root as Shomer, Jehozabad’s father: keeping, guarding, watching. That root brings the idea of protection into view beside the king’s servants and the violence they carry out.
