What Does 2 Kings 12:4 Mean in the King James?
And Jehoash said to the priests, All the money of the dedicated things that is brought into the house of the LORD, even the money of every one that passeth the account, the money that every man is set at, and all the money that cometh into any man’s heart to bring into the house of the LORD,

THE KEY
The money that “cometh into” a giver’s heart is described in Hebrew as rising there: what is set apart begins as an inward movement.
THE MEANING
This verse holds together counted contributions and money that rises in a person’s heart to bring. What is set apart for the LORD’s house can come through an assigned amount or a freely arising desire. The inner movement becomes a material gift.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It dissolves the belief that what is sacred must come only through obligation: the verse also names what a person’s heart moves them to bring.
THE ROOT
יַעֲלֶה
yaʿaleh
GROWS FROM
עלה
ʿ-l-h
to rise, ascend, or go up
The Hebrew says that the gift rises upon a person’s heart before they bring it to the LORD’s house. English “cometh into” hides that upward movement, which also appears in the word for an ascending offering.
ALSO GROWS
ʿolah: ascending offering; burnt offering
עֹלָה
The same root links an offering brought to God with the image of something rising.
maʿalah: ascent, step, or degree
מַעֲלָה
This branch keeps the upward motion audible in what the verse describes as a desire rising within.
הַקֳּדָשִׁים
haqqodashim
GROWS FROM
קדש
q-d-sh
to set apart for a distinct purpose
“dedicated things” in this verse is haqqodashim. The money is not merely collected; it is set apart. The same root names both what is dedicated and the sacred place receiving it, joining the gift to its destination.
ALSO GROWS
qadosh: set apart
קָדוֹשׁ
This branch makes the nature of the dedicated money visible: it is marked for a distinct purpose.
miqdash: sanctuary, a set-apart place
מִקְדָּשׁ
The shared root connects what is set apart as a gift with the set-apart house it enters.
THE PATTERN
Giving for sacred work can arise from a willing heart and become a tangible offering.
And they came, every one whose heart stirred him up, and every one whom his spirit made willing, and they brought the LORD’s offering to the work of the tabernacle of the congregation, and for all his service, and for the holy garments.Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.THE THREAD
Then the people rejoiced, for that they offered willingly, because with perfect heart they offered willingly to the LORD: and David the king also rejoiced with great joy. Both verses use לֵב (lev), “heart,” for the inward place from which an offering rises. Here the heart’s movement precedes bringing; there, a whole heart is joined to offering willingly.
