What Does 2 Kings 16:8 Mean in the King James?
And Ahaz took the silver and gold that was found in the house of the LORD, and in the treasures of the king’s house, and sent it for a present to the king of Assyria.
The analysis reads the King James wording.
King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The verb translated “sent” is שָׁלַח (shalach), which also means “send away” or “release”: here, Ahaz sends the wealth of both houses toward Assyria.
THE MEANING
This verse shows how the search for security can turn even what is kept in the LORD’s house into payment for an empire. Ahaz draws from both the LORD’s treasury and the king’s treasury, directing them toward one ruler.
THE ROOT
וַיִּשְׁלַח
vayyishlach
GROWS FROM
שלח
To send, send away, or release.
English “sent” names the movement, while the Hebrew root also carries the sense of sending away or letting go. The verse makes the direction of that movement visible: wealth held in two houses is sent toward Assyria.
ALSO GROWS
shaliach: Messenger or emissary; one who is sent.
שָׁלִיחַ
The emissary is defined by the sending, making the root’s movement into a person who carries it.
shilluach: Sending away or dismissal.
שִׁלּוּחַ
This branch gives the root’s outward movement a sharper edge: what is sent away leaves its former place.
THE PATTERN
When rulers seek security through a foreign power, wealth from the LORD’s house and the royal treasury can become tribute.
Then Asa took all the silver and the gold that were left in the treasures of the house of the LORD, and the treasures of the king’s house, and delivered them into the hand of his servants: and king Asa sent them to Ben-hadad, the son of Tabrimon, the son of Hezion, king of Syria, that dwelt at Damascus, saying,And Jehoash king of Judah took all the hallowed things that Jehoshaphat, and Jehoram, and Ahaziah, his fathers, kings of Judah, had dedicated, and his own hallowed things, and all the gold that was found in the treasures of the house of the LORD, and in the king’s house, and sent it to Hazael king of Syria: and he went away from Jerusalem. For Ahaz took away a portion out of the house of the LORD, and out of the house of the king, and of the princes, and gave it unto the king of Assyria: but he helped him not.THE THREAD
And afterward Moses and Aaron went in, and told Pharaoh, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Let my people go, that they may hold a feast unto me in the wilderness. The command “Let my people go” uses the same root, שָׁלַח (shalach), as “sent” in this verse. In Exodus the people are sent out from Pharaoh’s grip; here, wealth is sent toward Assyria, the root’s direction turns on what is being sent and where it goes.
