What Does 2 Kings 17:23 Mean in the King James?
Until the LORD removed Israel out of his sight, as he had said by all his servants the prophets. So was Israel carried away out of their own land to Assyria unto this day.

THE KEY
The Hebrew root behind “carried away” also means “be revealed,” giving exile an undertone of exposure.
THE MEANING
The verse holds two losses together: Israel is removed from before the LORD’s face and carried out of the land it calls its own. Exile is physical and communal here: a people is displaced into Assyria. “Unto this day” keeps the consequence open, so displacement remains a living condition rather than a sealed event.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
This undoes the belief that prophetic warnings are only words: here, what was spoken reaches into a people’s land and life, and its consequence continues.
THE ROOT
וַיִּגֶל
wayyigel
GROWS FROM
גלה
The root גלה (galah) means to uncover or reveal; in the Qal stem, it can also mean to go into exile.
English separates “carried away” from “revealed,” but both meanings belong to the Hebrew root גלה (galah). The verse’s exile word carries an additional sense of exposure: displacement brings the condition into view.
ALSO GROWS
higlah: He exiled or sent into exile.
הִגְלָה
This Hiphil form shares the root consonants גלה and makes explicit the force of driving someone into exile.
niglah: Was revealed or came into view.
נִגְלָה
This form shares the same root consonants and carries גלה’s other sense, uncovering what had been hidden.
THE PATTERN
A rupture in belonging becomes visible as displacement from a place of life.
So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life. And the LORD shall scatter thee among all people, from the one end of the earth even unto the other; and there thou shalt serve other gods, which neither thou nor thy fathers have known, even wood and stone. And they shall fall by the edge of the sword, and shall be led away captive into all nations: and Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled.THE THREAD
And the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.Isaiah uses the same Hebrew root גלה (galah) for “shall be revealed” that 2 Kings uses for Israel’s going into exile. The shared root brings exposure and displacement into the same word-family: what is removed from its place is also brought into view.
