What Does 2 Kings 2:7 Mean in the King James?
And fifty men of the sons of the prophets went, and stood to view afar off: and they two stood by Jordan.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The same Hebrew root says all fifty and the two “stood”; what divides them is where they take their stand.
THE MEANING
Fifty watchers stand across a gap, while two stand at the Jordan. The same verb describes both groups, so the difference is their position: the crowd sees the threshold, while the pair stand at it. The verse holds both nearness and distance before you now.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the assumption that seeing a threshold means you already stand at it.
THE ROOT
וַיַּעַמְדוּ
vayya'amdu
GROWS FROM
עמד
Stand, remain, take a stand.
“stood” in this verse is vayya'amdu. The verse repeats עמד (ʿ-m-d) for the fifty and then for the two: same action, different place. Its branch עַמּוּד (ʿammūd), “pillar,” carries standing into something that holds its position.
ALSO GROWS
ʿāmad: Stand, remain.
עָמַד
This is the verb used for both groups, making their different positions the verse’s contrast.
ʿammūd: Pillar, column.
עַמּוּד
A pillar is something that stands and holds its place, extending the root’s sense from an action to a steady position.
יַרְדֵּן
Yarden
GROWS FROM
ירד
Descend, go down.
“Jordan” in this verse is Yarden. The name Yarden is associated with ירד (yarad), “descend.” The scene sounds still, yet the place-name carries movement: the two stand beside what descends.
ALSO GROWS
yarad: Descend, go down.
יָרַד
This root connects the river’s name with downward movement.
horid: Bring down, cause to descend.
הוֹרִיד
This form carries the same root into an action that makes something descend.
מִנֶּגֶד
minneged
GROWS FROM
נגד
Be in front of, stand opposite.
English “afar off” sounds like distance alone, but מִנֶּגֶד (minneged, “opposite/in front of”) gives the watchers a facing relation to the pair. A related branch, הִגִּיד (higgid, “declare”), carries the root into making something known; here its sense is spatial.
ALSO GROWS
neged: Opposite, in front of.
נֶגֶד
This is the spatial idea inside minneged: the witnesses face across from the pair.
higgid: Tell, declare, make known.
הִגִּיד
This speech form shows another branch of the same root; the verse uses the spatial branch.
THE PATTERN
At a threshold, Scripture distinguishes those who watch from a distance from those who stand where passage takes place.
And Moses said unto the people, Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD, which he will shew to you to day: for the Egyptians whom ye have seen to day, ye shall see them again no more for ever. And the priests that bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD stood firm on dry ground in the midst of Jordan, and all the Israelites passed over on dry ground, until all the people were passed clean over Jordan. And all his acquaintance, and the women that followed him from Galilee, stood afar off, beholding these things.THE THREAD
And the priests that bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD stood firm on dry ground in the midst of Jordan, and all the Israelites passed over on dry ground, until all the people were passed clean over Jordan.Joshua 3:17 uses the same עמד (ʿ-m-d, “stand”) root for the priests who hold their place in the middle of Jordan while Israel passes through. It opens this scene further: standing at the river marks a place within the crossing, while the fifty remain opposite it.
