What Does 2 Kings 23:18 Mean in the King James?
And he said, Let him alone; let no man move his bones. So they let his bones alone, with the bones of the prophet that came out of Samaria.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
In Hebrew, “bones” and “self” meet in one word-root, so the prophet’s remains still carry the identity of the person whose voice is gone.
THE MEANING
The verse keeps the prophet named even when only bones remain. “Let him alone” draws a boundary around what is left, and his bones stay beside another prophet’s. You are not reduced to what can be seen or moved.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It is false that a person’s identity disappears when their voice and movement are gone; the verse still names the one whose bones are left in place.
THE ROOT
עַצְמֹתָיו
ʿaṣmōtāw
GROWS FROM
ע־צ־ם
ʿ-ṣ-m
Bone; substance or self, the root links what remains physically to the person’s own being.
The Hebrew word for bone also carries the sense of substance or self. That connection lets the repeated word “bones” keep pointing to the prophet as a person, not just to what remains of his body.
ALSO GROWS
ʿeṣem: Bone; substance; the very self
עֶצֶם
The singular form can name both a bone and a thing’s substance, keeping the person connected to what remains.
ʿaṣmō: Himself; his own self
עַצְמוֹ
The same word with a possessive ending means “himself,” bringing “his bones” close to “his own self,” rather than anonymous remains.
הַנִּיחוּ לוֹ
haniḥu lo
GROWS FROM
נ־ו־ח
n-w-ḥ
To rest, settle, or come to rest; in this form, to let someone rest.
“Let him alone” carries the sense of leaving him to rest. The command is followed by “let no man move his bones,” so the verse sets rest and movement directly against each other.
ALSO GROWS
nāḥ: Rested; settled
נָח
This verb form gives “let him alone” its sense of allowing the prophet to remain at rest.
menūḥāh: Rest; resting place
מְנוּחָה
The related noun evokes a place of rest, fitting the command to leave the bones where they are.
THE PATTERN
A spoken word can preserve the meaning and placement of bones beyond the life that bore them.
And Joseph took an oath of the children of Israel, saying, God will surely visit you, and ye shall carry up my bones from hence. Thus saith the Lord GOD unto these bones; Behold, I will cause breath to enter into you, and ye shall live:For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken.THE THREAD
And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.The word translated “bone” there shares its root with the “bones” repeated here, a root that also carries the sense of self or substance. Genesis makes that connection audible: the bones here belong to a named person, not anonymous remains.
