What Does 2 Kings 23:4 Mean in the King James?

And the king commanded Hilkiah the high priest, and the priests of the second order, and the keepers of the door, to bring forth out of the temple of the LORD all the vessels that were made for Baal, and for the grove, and for all the host of heaven: and he burned them without Jerusalem in the fields of Kidron, and carried the ashes of them unto Beth-el.

This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

The hands appointed to guard the temple’s threshold are commanded to carry its rival objects out.

An object devoted to a rival power does not become neutral by entering the LORD’s house: it is carried out and destroyed. The clearing reaches the threshold keepers, who become the hands that move the objects, and the remains are carried beyond Jerusalem to Bethel.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The verse undoes the belief that an object becomes acceptable merely because it has been placed inside a sacred house.

לְהוֹצִיא

lehotsi

GROWS FROM

יצא

y-ts-ʾ

To go out, exit; in this form, to cause something to go out.

“bring forth” in this verse is lehotsi. The Hebrew verb makes the going-out happen: these vessels are actively brought across the temple’s boundary. The same root can describe deliverance out of Egypt, so the shared word draws attention to the act of being brought out.

ALSO GROWS

yatsa: to go out, depart

יָצָא

This is the root’s basic motion; the vessels are made to take that outward path.

yetzi'ah: departure, going out

יְצִיאָה

This noun preserves the root’s sense of an exit, clarifying that the verse describes removal across a boundary.

שֹׁמְרֵי הַסַּף

shomrei hasaf

GROWS FROM

שמר

sh-m-r

To keep, watch, guard.

“keepers of the door” in this verse is shomrei hasaf. The threshold keepers are not merely named as guards; they are commanded to carry the vessels out. The root’s language of guarding and keeping now meets the act of clearing: their charge includes what passes through the threshold.

ALSO GROWS

shomer: keeper, watchman

שֹׁמֵר

The same root names the people charged with guarding the temple’s threshold.

mishmeret: watch, guard duty, charge

מִשְׁמֶרֶת

This branch makes the keepers’ responsibility visible as an assigned duty, now exercised in removing the vessels.

What is devoted to rival worship is removed from the place of devotion rather than treated as neutral.

And they gave unto Jacob all the strange gods which were in their hand, and all their earrings which were in their ears; and Jacob hid them under the oak which was by Shechem.
Genesis 35:4 · KJVObjects associated with rival gods are taken from the people and removed from their possession.
But thus shall ye deal with them; ye shall destroy their altars, and break down their images, and cut down their groves, and burn their graven images with fire.
Deuteronomy 7:5 · KJVRival worship’s objects and structures are broken down and burned, not accommodated.
Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you,
2 Corinthians 6:17 · KJVThe same pattern appears as a call to come out and be separate from what is unclean.
Come now therefore, and I will send thee unto Pharaoh, that thou mayest bring forth my people the children of Israel out of Egypt.
Exodus 3:10 · KJV

“Bring forth” here comes from the same root as “bring forth” in Exodus. In Exodus it carries the people out of Egypt; here it carries the vessels out of the temple, making the shared movement across a boundary visible.
