What Does 2 Kings 7:4 Mean in the King James?
If we say, We will enter into the city, then the famine is in the city, and we shall die there: and if we sit still here, we die also. Now therefore come, and let us fall unto the host of the Syrians: if they save us alive, we shall live; and if they kill us, we shall but die.

THE KEY
When every settled place leads to death, the step into uncertainty is the only place where life remains possible.
THE MEANING
The men see death in the city and in the place where they are sitting; the road toward the enemy carries danger, but also a chance to live. The verse speaks to the moment when the familiar offers no protection and the unknown holds a possibility that staying has closed.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that staying where you are is always the safer choice: here, remaining already carries death, while moving holds an uncertain chance of life.
THE ROOT
יָשַׁב
yashav
GROWS FROM
ישב
To sit, dwell, or remain.
“sit” in this verse is yashav. The word for sitting belongs to a root that also means dwelling and inhabiting. Their “here” is not neutral waiting; it is the place they are already dwelling toward death, so the opening begins as they leave it.
ALSO GROWS
yoshev: One who sits or dwells; an inhabitant.
יֹשֵׁב
The branch makes sitting a way of inhabiting a place, which sharpens the force of remaining where death is already present.
moshav: A dwelling place or seat.
מוֹשָׁב
This word from the same root shows how sitting and a settled place belong to one family of meaning.
חָיָה
chayah
GROWS FROM
חיה
To live or be alive.
The same root underlies “make us live” and “we shall live”: life is first something they may receive from another, then something they may inhabit. The verse holds that possibility beside death without turning risk into a guarantee.
ALSO GROWS
chai: Living; alive.
חַי
This branch names the living state the men hope to reach if they are spared.
chayyim: Life; living.
חַיִּים
This noun from the same root keeps their uncertain hope connected to life itself.
THE PATTERN
When the familiar position offers no secure future, a step into uncertainty can expose an opening that waiting cannot reach.
And Jonathan said to the young man that bare his armour, Come, and let us go over unto the garrison of these uncircumcised: it may be that the LORD will work for us: for there is no restraint to the LORD to save by many or by few.Go, gather together all the Jews that are present in Shushan, and fast ye for me, and neither eat nor drink three days, night or day: I also and my maidens will fast likewise; and so will I go in unto the king, which is not according to the law: and if I perish, I perish. And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus.THE THREAD
I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live:The “may live” here shares the חיה (chayah, live) root with the lepers’ “we shall live.” In Deuteronomy, choosing life is set against death; here that choice becomes concrete movement toward an uncertain chance to live.
