What Does 2 Kings 8:8 Mean in the King James?
And the king said unto Hazael, Take a present in thine hand, and go, meet the man of God, and enquire of the LORD by him, saying, Shall I recover of this disease?

THE KEY
Beneath “Shall I recover?” the Hebrew asks, “Shall I live?”, the question reaches beyond recovery to life itself.
THE MEANING
Illness can narrow the horizon to one question: does life continue through this? That question stands before the LORD here, and the verse leaves its answer open.
THE ROOT
הַאֶחְיֶה
ha’eḥyeh
GROWS FROM
חיה
ḥ-y-h
To live, be alive, or come to life.
The verb rendered “recover” comes from the root for living: the question is whether life will continue, not simply whether the illness will improve. The same root can describe life returning, connecting survival and revival in a way English can obscure.
ALSO GROWS
ḥay: Living, alive.
חַי
This branch names the state at the center of the king’s question: whether he remains alive.
ḥayyim: Life, living.
חַיִּים
This branch makes the question’s focus plain: life itself, rather than a particular measure of restored health.
חֳלִי
ḥŏlî
GROWS FROM
חלה
ḥ-l-h
To become weak or be sick.
“disease” in this verse is ḥŏlî. The word for sickness belongs to a root whose range includes weakness and illness. The verse places that weakened state beside the question formed from חיה (ḥ-y-h, to live), holding illness and continued life in the same sentence.
ALSO GROWS
ḥoleh: A sick person.
חֹלֶה
This related word names someone living within the weakened state the verse calls sickness.
maḥalah: Illness, disease.
מַחֲלָה
This branch shows the family resemblance between the particular sickness and the broader condition of illness.
THE PATTERN
Scripture brings the question of life into view where sickness, death, or their signs seem to settle the answer.
And the LORD heard the voice of Elijah; and the soul of the child came into him again, and he revived. And he said unto me, Son of man, can these bones live? And I answered, O Lord GOD, thou knowest.Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:THE THREAD
And the LORD heard the voice of Elijah; and the soul of the child came into him again, and he revived. The Hebrew verb translated “revived” is וַיְחִי (wayyeḥî, he lived again), from the same root חיה (ḥ-y-h, live) beneath “recover” in 2 Kings 8:8. Here the root names life returning, opening the question of whether life continues into the possibility of life restored.
