What Does 2 Kings 9:15 Mean in the King James?
But king Joram was returned to be healed in Jezreel of the wounds which the Syrians had given him, when he fought with Hazael king of Syria.) And Jehu said, If it be your minds, then let none go forth nor escape out of the city to go to tell it in Jezreel.

THE KEY
Hebrew places telling and leadership in the same root family, so Jehu’s ban on the report is also a move to control who can claim authority.
THE MEANING
A wounded king is back in Jezreel to recover, while Jehu orders that no one leave with the news. The verse holds bodily vulnerability beside enforced silence: the report is stopped at the point where someone could carry it out. Silence here is something power actively produces.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
Silence means there is nothing to report; here, silence is produced by preventing anyone from carrying the report out.
THE ROOT
לְהַגִּיד
lehaggid
GROWS FROM
נגד
To make known, declare, or set before others.
The closing clause says no fugitive may leave “to tell”, לְהַגִּיד (lehaggid), from נגד (n-g-d). The same root family includes נָגִיד (nāgîd), “leader,” bringing public declaration and authority together as Jehu blocks the news from reaching Jezreel.
ALSO GROWS
nāgîd: Leader, ruler.
נָגִיד
This title for a leader shares the root consonants, bringing authority into the same word family as public declaration.
neged: In front of, opposite.
נֶגֶד
It preserves the sense of something set before another; to declare is to put a matter before others.
פָּלִיט
pālîṭ
GROWS FROM
פלט
To escape or slip away; an escapee is someone who gets out.
The Hebrew names a פָּלִיט (pālîṭ), an escapee or fugitive, rather than leaving escape as an abstract possibility. Jehu’s order targets the bodies that could carry the report beyond the city.
ALSO GROWS
pəlēṭîm: Fugitives, survivors.
פְּלֵיטִים
The plural names the people who have escaped and can move news beyond the place they left.
pəlēṭāh: Escape, survival, remnant.
פְּלֵיטָה
The same root can name not only the person who gets out but what remains after an escape.
יִזְרְעֶאל
Yizre'el
GROWS FROM
זרע
To sow, plant seed.
Jezreel joins זרע (zāraʿ, “sow”) with אֵל (El, “God”), giving the name its sense “God sows.” The name carries an image of what is planted and spreads, a resonance beside Jehu’s effort to keep the news from going out.
ALSO GROWS
zōrēaʿ: One who sows, a sower.
זֹרֵעַ
The active form shows sowing as an act that sends seed outward.
zeraʿ: Seed, offspring.
זֶרַע
The seed is what is sown and can continue beyond the moment it leaves the hand.
THE PATTERN
In moments of contested rule, controlling the route of a report is part of controlling power.
Behold, they have there with them their two sons, Ahimaaz Zadok’s son, and Jonathan Abiathar’s son; and by them ye shall send unto me every thing that ye can hear. For if thou altogether holdest thy peace at this time, then shall there enlargement and deliverance arise to the Jews from another place; but thou and thy father’s house shall be destroyed: and who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this? For we can not but speak the things which we have seen and heard.THE THREAD
The voice of them that flee and escape out of the land of Babylon, to declare in Zion the vengeance of the LORD our God, the vengeance of his temple. The Hebrew uses both roots again: פְּלֵיטִים (pəlēṭîm, “fugitives”) and לְהַגִּיד (lehaggid, “to declare”). Here, escapees carry the report to Zion; in 2 Kings, Jehu’s order blocks that pairing.
