What Does 2 Samuel 11:14 Mean in the King James?
And it came to pass in the morning, that David wrote a letter to Joab, and sent it by the hand of Uriah.
The analysis reads the King James wording.
King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
In שָׁלַח (shalach), sending is also release: Uriah carries the letter that the next verse reveals as the order for his own death.
THE MEANING
Written intent gains reach when it leaves the writer’s hand and enters another person’s path. Uriah carries David’s letter to Joab; the next verse exposes it as an order for Uriah’s own death. Violence is already moving before the battle begins.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The belief that violence begins only with the visible blow falls away: here, its first movement is a letter entrusted to the person it endangers.
THE ROOT
וַיִּשְׁלַח
wayyišlaḥ
GROWS FROM
ש־ל־ח
sh-l-ḥ
To send forth, release, or let go.
“sent” in this verse is wayyišlaḥ. Shalach holds sending and release together: the hand lets something go so it can move beyond the sender. Here, that release carries a written intention toward Joab through Uriah’s own hand.
ALSO GROWS
shilluaḥ: Sending, dismissal, or release.
שִׁלּוּחַ
The same root names the act of sending something away; David’s letter is released into motion through Uriah.
shulḥan: Table; an extended place of provision.
שֻׁלְחָן
The root’s extending motion can carry provision or a command; what is sent determines what that movement brings.
Shiloach: Sent; also the name of the waters of Shiloah.
שִׁלֹחַ
The sent waters restore sight in the Gospel account; here, a sent message carries a concealed purpose.
דָּוִד
Dāwiḏ
GROWS FROM
דּוֹד
d-w-d
Beloved; also kinsman.
David’s name carries the sense of belovedness into a line where he sends a quiet letter through Uriah’s hand. That name’s nature sharpens the scene when the next verse reveals that the letter directs Uriah’s death.
ALSO GROWS
dōd: Beloved or kinsman.
דּוֹד
This is the word-family behind David’s name, placing belovedness beside the act of sending the letter.
dōdîm: Love or caresses.
דּוֹדִים
The same root can name affection; the next verse makes the tension between that root-sense and David’s action unmistakable.
סֵפֶר
sēfer
GROWS FROM
ס־פ־ר
s-p-r
To count, recount, or give an account; the word-family also names a written record or document.
Sefer can mean a book or document as well as a letter, so the message is more than an passing utterance: it is fixed in a form that can travel and be acted on. Its contents remain hidden in this verse, while its movement is already underway.
ALSO GROWS
sāphar: To count, recount, or tell.
סָפַר
This branch gathers words or events into an account; the letter gives David’s intention a form Joab can receive.
sōphēr: Scribe; one who records.
סֹפֵר
The root links the document to the act of recording, which lets an intention pass from its writer to another hand.
mispar: Number or count.
מִסְפָּר
The counting sense ties the word-family to what is set down and ordered; here, the written message carries an ordered command.
THE PATTERN
A written command carries its author’s intent into the hands that can enact it, even at a distance.
So she wrote letters in Ahab’s name, and sealed them with his seal, and sent the letters unto the elders and to the nobles that were in his city, dwelling with Naboth. And the letters were sent by posts into all the king’s provinces, to destroy, to kill, and to cause to perish, all Jews, both young and old, little children and women, in one day, even upon the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, which is the month Adar, and to take the spoil of them for a prey. And desired of him letters to Damascus to the synagogues, that if he found any of this way, whether they were men or women, he might bring them bound unto Jerusalem.THE THREAD
And he wrote in the letter, saying, Set ye Uriah in the forefront of the hottest battle, and retire ye from him, that he may be smitten, and die. This verse discloses the letter’s contents: Uriah is to be placed where he will be exposed, then left without support so that he dies. The hand carrying the message belongs to the very person the command targets.
