What Does 2 Samuel 12:28 Mean in the King James?
Now therefore gather the rest of the people together, and encamp against the city, and take it: lest I take the city, and it be called after my name.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
Joab sees that the city’s final capture will attach a name to the victory, so he puts David in the visible last act.
THE MEANING
A victory’s public name depends on who is joined to its completion. Joab brings David into the final taking so the city will be associated with the king. The work and the name carried by it can belong to different people.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The belief that the name attached to a victory always tells you who carried the work.
THE ROOT
וְנִקְרָא
wə-niqrāʾ
GROWS FROM
ק־ר־א
q-r-ʾ
Call out, summon, proclaim, or name.
The phrase is literally about a name being called upon the city: naming publicly associates a person with its outcome. שֵׁם (shem, name as public nature) is the identity at stake; קָרָא (qara, call or proclaim) is the act that attaches it.
ALSO GROWS
miqraʾ: A convocation or assembly; something called together.
מִקְרָא
This branch shows calling can gather people into a shared public identity, while the verse shows a name publicly associating a person with a city.
qeriʾah: A calling, reading, or proclamation.
קְרִיאָה
A name proclaimed aloud becomes a public claim of association, not merely a private label.
THE PATTERN
A name carries public identity and honor that can be sought, bestowed, or raised through what is done.
And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth. And I was with thee whithersoever thou wentest, and have cut off all thine enemies out of thy sight, and have made thee a great name, like unto the name of the great men that are in the earth.Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:THE THREAD
And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth. Both verses use שֵׁם (shem, name), where public identity is bound to what a deed represents. The builders seek to make a name through their city; Joab sees the captured city becoming associated with his name and yields David the visible final act.
