What Does 2 Samuel 12:3 Mean in the King James?
But the poor man had nothing, save one little ewe lamb, which he had bought and nourished up: and it grew up together with him, and with his children; it did eat of his own meat, and drank of his own cup, and lay in his bosom, and was unto him as a daughter.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The Hebrew says he ‘kept her alive,’ showing his care as the preservation of a life held within his household.
THE MEANING
A small life can be held within a household so fully that its loss wounds kinship. The lamb eats from the man’s bread, drinks from his cup, rests in his lap, and belongs among his children as a daughter.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The verse undoes the belief that an animal can be taken without taking anything relational: this lamb belongs to the man’s intimate household life.
THE ROOT
וַיְחַיֶּהָ
vayechayyeha
GROWS FROM
חיה
To live; in this verb form, to keep alive or preserve life.
The verb rendered ‘nourished up’ means ‘kept alive.’ The man’s care preserves a life that grows alongside his family and shares its table and lap.
ALSO GROWS
chai: Living; alive.
חַי
The lamb is presented as a living being whose life is sustained within the household.
chayyim: Life.
חַיִּים
The shared meals and closeness show that the man’s care includes the lamb in the life of the home.
יַחְדָּו
yachdav
GROWS FROM
יחד
To join or unite; to be together.
The verse says the lamb grows with the man and his children, then seals that bond with ‘together.’ This root family also includes יָחִיד (yachid), ‘the only one’ or ‘solitary one’: the lamb is singular, yet gathered into shared life.
ALSO GROWS
yachad: Together; as one.
יַחַד
It echoes the lamb’s place among the man and his children.
yachid: The only one; solitary.
יָחִיד
Its sense of being singular highlights the one lamb whose life is drawn into the household.
THE PATTERN
A creature’s value becomes visible through the care that draws it into shared life.
He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young. What man of you, having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it?A righteous man regardeth the life of his beast: but the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel.THE THREAD
He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young. The same Hebrew word, חֵיק (cheq), means bosom or lap in both verses. Isaiah’s shepherd carries lambs there; in this verse, the lamb’s place in the man’s lap makes its belonging part of the story’s measure of care.
