King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The language of a loyal invitation makes a dangerous gathering sound like an act of deference.
THE MEANING
You hear the courtesy before you see its cost: Absalom twice calls himself the king’s servant and asks the king and his servants to join a sheepshearing gathering. The ordinary occasion gives his household a reason to assemble at Absalom’s house. The next verses reveal that this gathering is arranged so Amnon can be murdered.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
Respectful language does not guarantee harmless intent; here, deference helps conceal a plan for murder.
THE ROOT
גֹזְזִים
gozezîm
GROWS FROM
גזז
to shear, to cut wool from an animal
“sheepshearers” in this verse is gozezîm. The root names the physical work of removing fleece. Shearing makes Absalom’s gathering seem like an ordinary household occasion, while he uses that occasion for a second purpose.
ALSO GROWS
gōzēz: a shearer; one who shears
גֹּזֵז
This is the person doing the work named by the root, making the invitation’s occasion concrete.
gēz: fleece; wool that has been shorn
גֵּז
This names what the shearing produces and keeps the verse grounded in the ordinary labor around which Absalom gathers the household.
עֶבֶד
ʿeved
GROWS FROM
עבד
to work, serve
The phrase “thy servant” appears twice, giving Absalom’s request a posture of subordination. Yet he is the host setting the occasion and directing who should attend, so the deferential wording sits alongside his control of the gathering.
ALSO GROWS
ʿāvad: to work, serve
עָבַד
The verb shows the labor and service carried by the servant’s title.
ʿavodah: work, service
עֲבֹדָה
This related noun makes the servant language sound like a real role of service even as Absalom takes the initiative in the scene.
THE PATTERN
A deferential or affectionate surface can gather someone into a concealed act of harm.
He that hateth dissembleth with his lips, and layeth up deceit within him;Now Absalom had commanded his servants, saying, Mark ye now when Amnon’s heart is merry with wine, and when I say unto you, Smite Amnon; then kill him, fear not: have not I commanded you? be courageous, and be valiant. Now he that betrayed him gave them a sign, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is he: hold him fast.THE THREAD
And Laban went to shear his sheep: and Rachel had stolen the images that were her father’s.The Hebrew word for “shear” in both verses comes from גזז (g-z-z), to shear or cut wool. Genesis places Rachel’s theft while Laban is away shearing; here, Absalom uses a sheepshearing gathering to bring the king’s household into reach of his plan.
