What Does 2 Samuel 13:32 Mean in the King James?
And Jonadab, the son of Shimeah David’s brother, answered and said, Let not my lord suppose that they have slain all the young men the king’s sons; for Amnon only is dead: for by the appointment of Absalom this hath been determined from the day that he forced his sister Tamar.

THE KEY
The verse says Amnon’s death was set in place on the day Tamar was violated, long before the day he dies.
THE MEANING
David, whose name is דָּוִד (David, “beloved”), receives the report of one death, not a slaughter of all his sons. Absalom, whose name is אָבְשָׁלוֹם (Avshalom, “father of peace”), has Amnon’s death set in motion from the day he forces Tamar. The name of peace stands beside a plan for death, while Tamar’s harm remains in the explanation of what follows.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The fear that all the king’s sons have been killed is false: only Amnon is dead, and the motive is specific.
THE ROOT
עַנּוֹתוֹ
ʿannōtô
GROWS FROM
ענה
ʿānâ
To afflict, humble, or bring low; here, to violate.
The word rendered “forced” belongs to a family that also names the afflicted person and affliction itself. Tamar’s suffering stays inside the verse’s account of why Absalom’s plan exists, rather than leaving the killing as an unexplained eruption.
ALSO GROWS
ʿānî: Afflicted person; poor person.
עָנִי
The same root names the person brought low, echoing Tamar’s position in the act.
ʿōnî: Affliction; misery.
עֳנִי
This branch names the suffering itself, keeping the harm done to Tamar visible in the verse’s explanation.
שׂוּמָה
śûmāh
GROWS FROM
שׂים
śîm
To put, set, or place.
The Hebrew says the plan was set in place at Absalom’s command from the day Tamar was violated. “Appointment” carries the image of a plan put in position and left there: the death follows an arrangement that predates its execution.
ALSO GROWS
śām: He set; he placed.
שָׂם
This form makes the verse’s language of a plan being set concrete.
lāśûm: To put; to set in place.
לָשׂוּם
This infinitive shares the seed of placing or arranging that shapes the account of Amnon’s death.
THE PATTERN
An injury carried forward as a private plan can produce a second act of violence.
And it came to pass on the third day, when they were sore, that two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, Dinah’s brethren, took each man his sword, and came upon the city boldly, and slew all the males.Say not, I will do so to him as he hath done to me: I will render to the man according to his work.Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.THE THREAD
And when Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, prince of the country, saw her, he took her, and lay with her, and defiled her.The Hebrew verb translated “forced” in 2 Samuel and “defiled” here comes from ענה (ʿānâ), meaning to afflict or violate. The shared root joins the two scenes at the word for the harm itself, keeping Tamar’s violation visible as the stated beginning of Absalom’s plan.
