King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The name Absalom carries wholeness, yet his camp gives the rebellion a place to hold.
THE MEANING
Conflict becomes concrete when a following gathers in one place: Israel and Absalom are now camped in Gilead. Absalom’s name, אַבְשָׁלוֹם (ʾAvshalom, “my father is wholeness”), stands in tension with the conflict taking shape around him.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
A name of wholeness does not guarantee that the movement gathered under it is whole.
THE ROOT
וַיִּחַן
vayyiḥan
GROWS FROM
חנה
ḥ-n-h
To encamp, pitch a camp, or settle in a camp.
“pitched” in this verse is vayyiḥan. The verb links taking a place with the camp or host that occupies it. The word holds both the act of settling and the gathered force in one family.
ALSO GROWS
maḥaneh: Camp; host.
מַחֲנֶה
This noun joins the act of encamping to the assembled force that occupies the place.
ḥōneh: One who encamps.
חֹנֶה
The same root can describe one who takes up a position around another, whether the presence is protective or military.
THE PATTERN
When conflict gathers, it becomes territorial: people encamp, surround, and hold ground.
And the Philistines gathered themselves together to fight with Israel, thirty thousand chariots, and six thousand horsemen, and people as the sand which is on the sea shore in multitude: and they came up, and pitched in Michmash, eastward from Beth-aven.Though an host should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear: though war should rise against me, in this will I be confident. And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them.THE THREAD
And Laban said, This heap is a witness between me and thee this day. Therefore was the name of it called Galeed;Gilead echoes Galeed, the name given to a heap that stands as a witness between two parties. The land carries that boundary-and-witness resonance as Israel and Absalom take their place there.
