What Does 2 Samuel 20:22 Mean in the King James?

Then the woman went unto all the people in her wisdom. And they cut off the head of Sheba the son of Bichri, and cast it out to Joab. And he blew a trumpet, and they retired from the city, every man to his tent. And Joab returned to Jerusalem unto the king.

This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

A woman’s wisdom ends the siege, but the settlement is sealed with a severed head.

The woman’s wisdom reaches the people, and the force withdraws from the city after Sheba’s head is cut off and cast to Joab. The trumpet sounds, and Joab returns to Jerusalem. The city is spared, but the violence that secures its safety remains visible.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The belief that a successful settlement must also be harmless is undone: the city is spared through Sheba’s execution.

בְּחָכְמָתָהּ

bəḥokmātāh

GROWS FROM

חכם

ḥ-k-m

To be wise; to act skillfully.

“in her wisdom” in this verse is bəḥokmātāh. English can make wisdom sound like a possession, but ⁨חָכְמָה⁩ (ḥokmāh, wisdom) also names practiced skill, the capacity to act effectively. Here, that skill reaches the people and changes the city’s crisis, though the resolution is lethal.

ALSO GROWS

ḥākam: To be wise; to act skillfully.

חָכַם

The verb keeps wisdom active: the woman’s wisdom appears in what she does with the people, not only in what she knows.

ḥākām: Wise; skillful.

חָכָם

The same word can describe a skilled maker, showing that wisdom carries a practical sense of capability that fits the woman’s effective counsel.

וַיִּכְרְתוּ

wayyikretu

GROWS FROM

כרת

k-r-t

To cut; to cut off.

“cut off” in this verse is wayyikretu. The Hebrew verb is literal here: the people sever Sheba’s head. The same root also speaks of “cutting” a covenant, so its range reaches from physical severance to a binding act; this verse keeps the bodily violence plain.

ALSO GROWS

kārat berit: To cut a covenant.

כָּרַת בְּרִית

The same verb can describe establishing a binding relationship; here it describes a starkly bodily act that ends the city’s crisis.

keritut: Cutting off; divorce.

כְּרִיתוּת

This noun carries the root’s sense of rupture, echoing how Sheba is cut off from the conflict, and from life.

Wisdom can turn a community’s danger toward safety, while the means and character of the resolution remain visible.

Now there was found in it a poor wise man, and he by his wisdom delivered the city; yet no man remembered that same poor man.
Ecclesiastes 9:15 · KJVIt gives the same civic scale: one person’s wisdom preserves a city, though the means and aftermath differ.
Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.
Proverbs 11:14 · KJVIt links counsel with a people’s safety, echoing the woman’s wisdom as the hinge between siege and withdrawal.
But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.
James 3:17 · KJVIt describes wisdom by its peaceable character, placing this verse’s violent resolution beside another measure of what wisdom can look like.
Now there was found in it a poor wise man, and he by his wisdom delivered the city; yet no man remembered that same poor man.
Ecclesiastes 9:15 · KJV

Both verses use ⁨חָכְמָה⁩ (ḥokmāh, wisdom) in a city’s crisis: in Ecclesiastes, a wise man delivers the city; here, a woman’s wisdom helps bring the siege to an end. The shared root reveals wisdom’s civic force, while 2 Samuel leaves the human cost of that deliverance in view.
