King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The command’s force becomes visible in what it makes countable: a whole people.
THE MEANING
An authoritative word can overrule resistance and set people in motion; Joab and the captains leave the king’s presence to count Israel. The count brings each person into someone’s account, it is more than a detached total.
THE ROOT
לִפְקֹד
lifqod
GROWS FROM
פקד
Attend to, visit, muster, or take account of.
English makes “number” sound like arithmetic alone, but פקד also means to attend to, visit, or muster. Counting Israel is an act of taking a people into account, with the attention and authority that implies.
ALSO GROWS
paqad: visit, attend to
פָּקַד
The same root can describe attending to people, opening a sense of care and notice beneath the act of counting them.
pequddah: oversight, charge, responsibility
פְּקֻדָּה
This branch links taking account with responsibility for those who are counted.
וַיֶּחֱזַק
vayyechezaq
GROWS FROM
חזק
Be strong, become firm, strengthen.
“prevailed” in this verse is vayyechezaq. The Hebrew presents the king’s word as becoming strong against Joab. Its force is shown in what follows: the commanders leave the king’s presence and carry out the count.
ALSO GROWS
chazaq: be strong, be firm
חָזַק
The verse uses this root to show the king’s word gaining force.
chizzeq: strengthen
חִזֵּק
This form makes explicit the root’s sense of imparting strength, the force carried by the king’s command.
hecheziq: hold fast, maintain
הֶחֱזִיק
This branch echoes the firmness with which a word can hold its place against resistance.
דְּבַר
devar
GROWS FROM
דבר
Speak, utter; the related noun can mean a word, matter, or thing.
דָּבָר can name both a spoken word and a matter or thing. The king’s word is not left as sound: it becomes the matter enacted when the commanders go to count Israel.
ALSO GROWS
dibber: speak, declare
דִּבֵּר
This verbal form shows the spoken source of the king’s command.
davar: word, matter, thing
דָּבָר
The noun holds speech and the matter it sets in motion within the same Hebrew word-family.
THE PATTERN
Counting places lives inside the account of whoever counts them.
When thou takest the sum of the children of Israel after their number, then shall they give every man a ransom for his soul unto the LORD, when thou numberest them; that there be no plague among them, when thou numberest them.He telleth the number of the stars; he calleth them all by their names. But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows.THE THREAD
Go, and gather the elders of Israel together, and say unto them, The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob, appeared unto me, saying, I have surely visited you, and seen that which is done to you in Egypt:The Hebrew behind “number” is פקד (paqad), the same root used for “visited” here. The root can carry both taking account and attending to, linking the king’s census with the language of being seen and attended to.
