What Does 2 Samuel 24:5 Mean in the King James?
And they passed over Jordan, and pitched in Aroer, on the right side of the city that lieth in the midst of the river of Gad, and toward Jazer:

THE KEY
The census is not an abstract total: its first movement is עָבַר (avar), “to cross,” placing the count on the far side of a boundary.
THE MEANING
The counting takes shape as a journey across real ground. The men cross Jordan, camp at Aroer beside the city named in the verse, and continue toward Jazer. Each verb marks a stage: cross, camp, proceed.
THE ROOT
וַיַּעַבְרוּ
vayya'avru
GROWS FROM
עבר
to pass across, to cross over
“passed over” in this verse is vayya'avru. The root makes a boundary visible: these men do not merely arrive at the next place; they cross from one side of Jordan to the other. Its other forms name the “other side” and a “crossing,” holding the passage and the far bank in one word-family.
ALSO GROWS
ever: the other side, beyond
עֵבֶר
The crossing carries the men toward a far side; the root includes both the passage and what lies beyond it.
ma'avar: a crossing, passage
מַעֲבָר
This noun names the route across, making the physical threshold in the verse part of the root’s wider word-family.
וַיַּחֲנוּ
vayyaḥănū
GROWS FROM
חנה
to encamp, settle temporarily
“pitched” in this verse is vayyaḥănū. This is a pause within a journey, not its end. The related word מַחֲנֶה (maḥaneh) means “camp” or “host,” so the root can hold both the stopping place and the gathered company there.
ALSO GROWS
maḥaneh: camp, encampment, host
מַחֲנֶה
The men who camp here are part of an organized company moving along a route.
ḥoneh: one who camps
חֹנֶה
The word keeps attention on the people making this temporary stop before the movement continues.
THE PATTERN
A journey becomes legible through crossings and named stages, with each crossing marking a change of ground.
And he rose up that night, and took his two wives, and his two womenservants, and his eleven sons, and passed over the ford Jabbok. These are the journeys of the children of Israel, which went forth out of the land of Egypt with their armies under the hand of Moses and Aaron. Therefore loosing from Troas, we came with a straight course to Samothracia, and the next day to Neapolis;THE THREAD
And the priests that bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD stood firm on dry ground in the midst of Jordan, and all the Israelites passed over on dry ground, until all the people were passed clean over Jordan. The same Hebrew root עבר (avar), “to cross,” stands behind “passed over” in both verses. Joshua makes the Jordan crossing explicit for the whole people, while 2 Samuel begins its route with that same act of passage.
