This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

The Hebrew repeats the same root for command and compliance: Paltiel turns back, but his grief remains behind her.

A person can be ordered to turn back while grief is still in motion. Paltiel obeys, but his tears remain in the verse: the command ends his pursuit without erasing the cost of the separation.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

Being told to return does not mean the loss has been repaired.

שׁוּב

shuv

GROWS FROM

שוב

Turn back; return.

Abner commands ⁨שׁוּב⁩, “return,” and the verse says ⁨וַיָּשֹׁב⁩, “he returned”, the same root makes the order and the action echo. Elsewhere this root also describes restoration, but here Paltiel turns back while his grief remains visible; returning does not itself restore what was lost.

ALSO GROWS

teshuvah: Return or turning back.

תְּשׁוּבָה

This branch makes clear that return is a change of direction, which can be compelled without repairing a bond.

yeshovev: He restores or revives.

יְשׁוֹבֵב

Psalm 23:3 uses this form for restoring the living soul; it shows a fuller kind of return than simply being sent back.

When a bond is breaking, grief remains visible in bodies and actions.

And she went, and sat her down over against him a good way off, as it were a bowshot: for she said, Let me not see the death of the child. And she sat over against him, and lift up her voice, and wept.
Genesis 21:16 · KJVHagar’s separation from her child becomes visible in the distance she places between them and in her weeping.
And they lifted up their voice, and wept again: and Orpah kissed her mother in law; but Ruth clave unto her.
Ruth 1:14 · KJVThe parting is marked by both tears and the different directions the women take.
And they all wept sore, and fell on Paul’s neck, and kissed him,
Acts 20:37 · KJVThe community’s grief shows in their bodies as they face a coming separation.
He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.
Psalm 23:3 · KJV

The Hebrew word translated “restoreth” comes from the same root, ⁨שׁוּב⁩ (shuv), as “return” here. Paltiel turns back because he is ordered to; the psalm uses that root for restoration of the living soul, revealing that a change of direction and a restoration are not always the same thing.
