What Does 2 Samuel 5:17 Mean in the King James?
But when the Philistines heard that they had anointed David king over Israel, all the Philistines came up to seek David; and David heard of it, and went down to the hold.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The public announcement of David’s anointing draws the threat into the open, and the newly named king’s next step is downward into refuge.
THE MEANING
Public recognition can make what is named visible to its opposition. Your movement into refuge can coexist with the role that has been recognized; going down into shelter does not make the naming disappear.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The verse undoes the lie that being publicly recognized for a role keeps opposition from coming.
THE ROOT
מְצוּדָה
metsudah
GROWS FROM
צוד
tsud
To hunt, pursue, or capture.
“hold” in this verse is metsudah. The word for refuge belongs to the language of hunting. David is being sought, and he goes down into a stronghold whose root carries the sense of pursuit and capture, joining danger and shelter in one word-family.
ALSO GROWS
tsayid: Hunt, game, or prey.
צַיִד
This branch names the hunt and what is hunted; David is sought while he descends into a related word for a stronghold.
matsod: Hunting net or trap; also a stronghold.
מָצוֹד
Its meanings hold both capture and fortified shelter, echoing the tension between pursuit and refuge in the verse.
מָשְׁחוּ
mashchu
GROWS FROM
משח
m-sh-ch
To apply oil; to anoint.
“anointed” in this verse is mashchu. The root begins with an act of applying oil, not merely a title. Here that act becomes public news, and the recognition brings opposition into view.
ALSO GROWS
mashiach: Anointed one.
מָשִׁיחַ
The title grows from the same act of anointing that the Philistines hear about.
mishchah: Anointing oil.
מִשְׁחָה
This branch keeps the physical act inside the word-family: the public status begins with oil applied to a person.
דָּוִד
David
GROWS FROM
דוד
d-w-d
Beloved.
David’s name carries belovedness within it. In this verse, the beloved is also the one being sought by those who oppose his new recognition.
ALSO GROWS
dod: Beloved or beloved one.
דּוֹד
This form holds the nature compressed into David’s name: belovedness.
dodim: Loves or caresses.
דּוֹדִים
This related form appears in the language of love, keeping the name’s root connected to intimate affection as pursuit gathers around David.
THE PATTERN
When a person’s recognized role or allegiance is exposed, opposition can gather against it.
The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his anointed, saying,Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also.THE THREAD
And he brought them before the king of Moab: and they dwelt with him all the while that David was in the hold. The word translated “hold” here reappears in 1 Samuel 22:4 as the place David inhabits while his family stays under another king’s protection. Its root carries the language of hunting and capture, so refuge and pursuit remain joined in David’s story.
