What Does 2 Timothy 4:16 Mean in the King James?
At my first answer no man stood with me, but all men forsook me: I pray God that it may not be laid to their charge.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The verse lets abandonment be named without requiring that it remain a debt against the abandoners.
THE MEANING
When you are left to answer alone, the absence stands in plain words: no one stands with you; everyone leaves. Yet the prayer asks that their abandonment not be entered against them, so releasing the charge does not pretend the abandonment never happened.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie is that your hurt only counts if the people who abandoned you remain permanently charged for it.
THE ROOT
λογισθείη
logistheiē
GROWS FROM
λογίζομαι (logizomai), λογισ- stem
to reckon, count, or enter into an account
“laid to their charge” in this verse is logistheiē. The Greek asks, “May it not be reckoned to them.” The abandonment remains plainly named; the prayer interrupts the move from naming it to keeping it as a lasting charge.
ALSO GROWS
logismos: calculation or reasoning
λογισμός
It keeps the word’s accounting sense in view: this is a matter of what is counted.
ellogeō: reckon or put to someone’s account
ἐλλογέω
This related form makes the ledger image explicit: a wrong can be recognized without being entered against someone.
ἐγκατέλιπον
enkatelipon
GROWS FROM
λείπω
leipō
to leave, be absent, or lack
“forsook” in this verse is enkatelipon. The Greek word carries the act of leaving someone behind. Its word family also names what remains after a departure, holding the loneliness of the absence in view even as the prayer releases its claim.
ALSO GROWS
kataleipō: leave behind
καταλείπω
This compound preserves the concrete image of someone being left behind.
leimma: a remainder, what is left
λεῖμμα
The same root can name what remains after something or someone has left.
THE PATTERN
A wrong can be named or owed while mercy releases the claim it seems to carry.
The discretion of a man deferreth his anger; and it is his glory to pass over a transgression. Then the lord of that servant was moved with compassion, and loosed him, and forgave him the debt. Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.THE THREAD
Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin.Romans 4:8 uses λογίζομαι (logizomai), meaning “reckon” or “account,” the same Greek root behind “laid to their charge” here. What is not counted against a person is not the same as what never happened.
