THE KEY
The Greek packs “preached the gospel” into one verb: announcing good news is already making it present there.
THE MEANING
The good news reaches you as an announcement, not just an idea. Its voice belongs in the place you occupy now; its arrival takes the form of being spoken there.
THE ROOT
εὐαγγελιζόμενοι
euangelizomenoi
GROWS FROM
ἀγγελ-
angel-
The stem carries the sense of announcing, telling, or reporting a message.
“preached the gospel” in this verse is euangelizomenoi. English separates the act of preaching from the gospel being preached, but the Greek verb joins them: it means announcing good news. With “there,” the place is more than a backdrop, the announcement is happening in that very place.
ALSO GROWS
euangelion: good news, gospel
εὐαγγέλιον
This is the message named within the verb: the good news is what is being announced.
angelos: messenger
ἄγγελος
The messenger belongs to the same announce-and-carry-a-message word family.
angelia: message, report
ἀγγελία
This branch makes the spoken content visible: good news arrives as a message.
THE PATTERN
Good news becomes present as it is announced in the place where people are.
How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace; that bringeth good tidings of good, that publisheth salvation; that saith unto Zion, Thy God reigneth! The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you.THE THREAD
And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!Romans uses the same good-news word family, then gives the announcement feet. That makes “there” in Acts concrete: the good news is carried into the place where it is spoken.
