THE KEY
A letter can be read before the person described in it is fully understood.
THE MEANING
A written account can begin understanding, but a question opens what the page leaves unknown. You are more than the description already in front of another person. Understanding grows as information is placed within a fuller life.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The verse undoes the belief that once a report is read, the person it describes is already fully understood.
THE ROOT
ἀναγνούς
anagnous
GROWS FROM
γινώσκω (ginōskō; stem γνω-, gnō-)
To know, recognize, or perceive; ἀναγινώσκω (anaginōskō) means to read or recognize.
English makes “read” sound like a completed encounter with information, but the Greek verb carries the knowing-root γινώσκω within it. Here, reading does not close the inquiry: a question follows, and only then is the detail learned.
ALSO GROWS
gnōsis: knowledge, knowing
γνῶσις
The shared root makes visible the knowing inside the act of reading, while the verse shows that the letter alone does not settle every detail.
gnōrizō: to make known, disclose
γνωρίζω
This branch turns toward what is revealed: the question makes the province known and advances understanding beyond the written account.
THE PATTERN
Understanding grows when a report is followed by inquiry and careful hearing.
And the judges shall make diligent inquisition: and, behold, if the witness be a false witness, and hath testified falsely against his brother; He that answereth a matter before he heareth it, it is folly and shame unto him.Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.THE THREAD
Doth our law judge any man, before it hear him, and know what he doeth? The Greek word translated “know” shares the γινώσκω (ginōskō) root inside “read” in Acts. Both verses leave knowing open until attention and inquiry have gone further than the first account.
