What Does Acts 27:22 Mean in the King James?
And now I exhort you to be of good cheer: for there shall be no loss of any man’s life among you, but of the ship.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The word translated “life” is the same Greek word Luke uses two verses later to count the “souls” aboard, so the promise protects every person even as the ship is lost.
THE MEANING
Here, preservation and loss occupy the same moment: the people live, and the ship is lost. The verse keeps the wreckage in view instead of making safety mean that nothing breaks. That distinction remains legible now: what carries you and the life carried within it are not the same thing.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that if the vessel is lost, everyone within it must be lost too: the ship is lost, but the people live.
THE ROOT
ψυχῆς
psychēs
GROWS FROM
ψυχ-
psych-
Living soul, life, person
Luke uses ψυχή here for a person’s life and two verses later for the 276 “souls” aboard. English separates those renderings, but the Greek keeps the living person and the life being preserved in one word.
ALSO GROWS
psychē: Living soul, life, person
ψυχή
In Acts 27:37, this same word counts the people aboard as “souls.”
psychikos: Natural; pertaining to the living soul
ψυχικός
This related form shows the same word-family describing a person in their living, embodied nature.
ἀποβολή
apobolē
GROWS FROM
βάλλω
ballō
To throw, cast
The word for “loss” grows from the language of casting or throwing away. The sentence assigns that loss to the ship, while the people, the living souls, are not cast away.
ALSO GROWS
ballō: Throw, cast
βάλλω
This is the action at the root of the word for loss.
apoballō: Throw away, cast off
ἀποβάλλω
This form makes the sense of loss as something cast away explicit.
ekballō: Cast out
ἐκβάλλω
This related form carries the same casting action into the idea of being driven out.
THE PATTERN
The living person can be carried through mortal danger while the danger remains real.
Our soul is escaped as a bird out of the snare of the fowlers: the snare is broken, and we are escaped. And the princes, governors, and captains, and the king’s counsellors, being gathered together, saw these men, upon whose bodies the fire had no power, nor was an hair of their head singed, neither were their coats changed, nor the smell of fire had passed on them.Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed;THE THREAD
And we were in all in the ship two hundred threescore and sixteen souls. The Greek word ψυχή appears in both verses: the KJV renders it “life” here and “souls” in verse 37. The word shifts from naming what is preserved to counting the 276 people whose lives are preserved.
