What Does Acts 8:26 Mean in the King James?
And the angel of the Lord spake unto Philip, saying, Arise, and go toward the south unto the way that goeth down from Jerusalem unto Gaza, which is desert.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The “angel” is a messenger, and the message places Philip on a road whose purpose is not yet visible.
THE MEANING
A message gives the reader a next step before the full purpose of the route appears. Even a road through barren ground can be part of a purposeful journey.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
This dissolves the assumption that a route through barren ground has no purpose: the next step can be clear before the destination’s meaning is.
THE ROOT
ἄγγελος
ángelos
GROWS FROM
ἀγγελ-
angel-
Message, report; as a noun, the one who carries it, a messenger.
“angel” in this verse is ángelos. Here the word names a messenger bearing a spoken direction. Its word-family also appears in εὐαγγέλιον (euangelion), “good news,” linking the message carried to the road Philip takes.
ALSO GROWS
angellō: To announce or report.
ἀγγέλλω
The messenger’s role is to carry a report; here the message gives Philip a direction.
euangelion: Good news or gospel.
εὐαγγέλιον
This related word keeps the idea of a carried message present as Philip is sent toward the next encounter.
ὁδός
hodós
GROWS FROM
ὁδ-
hod-
Road, path, or course of travel.
Here hodos is a physical road; elsewhere in Acts, the same word names “the Way,” a lived path. The road to Gaza can therefore resonate as a path on which a larger way is disclosed.
ALSO GROWS
exodos: A departure or going out.
ἔξοδος
This compound carries the same road-word into the sense of setting out or leaving.
hodoiporia: A journey or travel by road.
ὁδοιπορία
It makes explicit the movement already present in Philip’s directed journey.
THE PATTERN
A messenger’s word prepares the next stretch of a journey before its full outcome is visible.
The LORD God of heaven, which took me from my father’s house, and from the land of my kindred, and which spake unto me, and that sware unto me, saying, Unto thy seed will I give this land; he shall send his angel before thee, and thou shalt take a wife unto my son from thence. And the angel of the LORD came again the second time, and touched him, and said, Arise and eat; because the journey is too great for thee. And they said, Cornelius the centurion, a just man, and one that feareth God, and of good report among all the nation of the Jews, was warned from God by an holy angel to send for thee into his house, and to hear words of thee.THE THREAD
And desired of him letters to Damascus to the synagogues, that if he found any of this way, whether they were men or women, he might bring them bound unto Jerusalem.“Way” here is the same Greek word, hodos, used for the road Philip takes toward Gaza. In Acts 9:2 it names a lived path, so the literal road in Acts 8:26 carries the resonance of a way that can be walked.
