What Does Acts 9:3 Mean in the King James?
And as he journeyed, he came near Damascus: and suddenly there shined round about him a light from heaven:

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
Heaven’s light does not wait at the end of the road; it flashes around the traveler already on it.
THE MEANING
A person can be moving toward a settled destination when a sudden disclosure surrounds the journey itself. The light is not merely ahead as a marker; it reaches the traveler from beyond the visible frame and makes the present path newly visible. The encounter arrives before the destination is reached.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that once a course is set, the only thing left is to arrive.
THE ROOT
περιαστράπτω
periastráptō
GROWS FROM
ἀστραπ- (astrap-, lightning-flash stem), with περί (perí, around)
Flash like lightning; with the prefix περί, flash all around.
“shined round about” in this verse is periastráptō. The Greek verb carries the flash of lightning as well as the sense of shining around. The light reaches Saul as a sudden, surrounding event, not only as a distant point ahead.
ALSO GROWS
astráptō: to flash like lightning
ἀστράπτω
This base verb shows the flash within the surrounding light of the verse.
astrapḗ: lightning, a lightning-flash
ἀστραπή
This related noun makes the brightness and suddenness of the encounter audible in the same word-family.
φῶς
phōs
GROWS FROM
φωτ-
phōt-
Light; that which makes visible.
The word names more than brightness: light makes something visible. Here it comes from heaven and surrounds the traveler, so the encounter changes what can be seen along the way.
ALSO GROWS
phōtízō: to illuminate, give light
φωτίζω
This verb shows the action carried by light: it illuminates what was not visible.
phōtismós: illumination, the giving of light
φωτισμός
This related noun reinforces that the light is an act of disclosure, not merely a bright object.
THE PATTERN
Light from God enters a person’s present world and makes itself visible there.
A Psalm of David. The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.THE THREAD
And it came to pass, that, as I made my journey, and was come nigh unto Damascus about noon, suddenly there shone from heaven a great light round about me.This retelling uses the same rare Greek verb, περιαστράπτω (periastráptō), meaning “flash all around.” The repeated word keeps the surrounding flash at the center of the encounter: the light does not simply appear ahead, but encloses the traveler.
