What Does Amos 1:10 Mean in the King James?
But I will send a fire on the wall of Tyrus, which shall devour the palaces thereof.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The wall that seems to guard Tyre becomes the threshold through which the fire reaches its palaces.
THE MEANING
This verse speaks now to the confidence placed in walls and palaces: a boundary can be the place where destruction arrives, and status offers no shelter from it. The fire reaches from the wall into the palace, exposing the limit of what power can secure.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The verse undoes the belief that a strong boundary guarantees the safety of everything behind it; Tyre’s palace is consumed through the wall that seems to defend it.
THE ROOT
מְשַׁלֵּחַ
meshallēaḥ sending
GROWS FROM
שלח
To send forth, release, or stretch out.
“send” in this verse is meshallēaḥ sending. The fire is released toward the wall, and its reach is measured by the palaces it consumes. The same root appears in שִׁלֹחַ (Shiloach, sent forth) and שֻׁלְחָן (shulchan, table), holding release as both a force sent outward and provision extended; here its direction is fire.
ALSO GROWS
Shiloach: Sent forth; the name of the waters of Shiloah.
שִׁלֹחַ
The name carries the same movement of something released and sent onward, while Amos’s fire is sent toward Tyre.
shulchan: Table; provision extended outward.
שֻׁלְחָן
The root’s reach can extend provision as well as release destruction; in Amos, what is sent forth consumes the seat of power.
וְאָכְלָה
veʾāḵəlâ and it
GROWS FROM
אכל
To eat or consume.
“devour” in this verse is veʾāḵəlâ and it. The Hebrew describes the fire as an eater: the palaces become what it consumes. The same root names ordinary food, turning the image of Tyre’s grandeur into a stark reversal, the palace itself becomes the fire’s meal.
ALSO GROWS
okhel: Food.
אֹכֶל
The word for food shares the root of the fire’s consuming action; the palaces become what the fire takes in.
maʾakhal: Food or something eaten.
מַאֲכָל
This branch makes the palace’s fate concrete: it becomes the thing consumed.
THE PATTERN
Judgment by fire consumes what once looked secure, reaching beyond the appearance of strength.
Thou shalt make them as a fiery oven in the time of thine anger: the LORD shall swallow them up in his wrath, and the fire shall devour them. And I will kindle a fire in the wall of Damascus, and it shall consume the palaces of Ben-hadad.Therefore shall her plagues come in one day, death, and mourning, and famine; and she shall be utterly burned with fire: for strong is the Lord God who judgeth her.THE THREAD
And I will send a fire on Magog, and among them that dwell carelessly in the isles: and they shall know that I am the LORD.Ezekiel uses the same root, שָׁלַח (shalach, send forth or release), for fire. In both verses the fire is sent toward a named target, its reach extending beyond the boundary to what lies within.
