King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The voice that issues from the city of wholeness is a roar whose reach makes pasture grieve and Carmel’s crown dry.
THE MEANING
The LORD’s voice comes from Zion and Yerushalayim, the named center of wholeness, and reaches the places that shelter and feed life. The shepherds’ habitations mourn, and Carmel’s summit withers. The verse speaks now wherever what seems secure and flourishing stands within the reach of that voice.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that provision and fertile land are self-securing, beyond the reach of the LORD’s voice.
THE ROOT
יִשְׁאַג
yish'ag
GROWS FROM
שׁאג
sha'ag
To roar, especially with the force of a lion’s roar.
The Hebrew verb here belongs to the same root used for a lion’s roar. In Amos, the LORD’s roar is not distant background: it is a forceful signal whose reach becomes visible in the land’s response.
ALSO GROWS
sha'ag: To roar; used of the lion in Amos 3:8.
שָׁאַג
There, the lion’s roar stands beside the LORD GOD’s speech, linking this roar with a voice that summons a response.
she'agah: A roar or roaring, as in Isaiah 5:29.
שְׁאָגָה
Isaiah places the same root beside a lion seizing prey, keeping the threatening force of Amos’s image in view.
יְרוּשָׁלַיִם
Yerushalayim
GROWS FROM
שׁלם
sh-l-m
To be whole, complete, or intact.
“Jerusalem” in this verse is Yerushalayim. Yerushalayim carries the sound of shalom, wholeness, with a paired ending, the two wholenesses. The roar comes from this named center of wholeness while the shepherd places mourn and Carmel dries, setting that center against the landscape’s vulnerability.
ALSO GROWS
shalom: Wholeness, completeness, well-being.
שָׁלוֹם
This shared root gives the city’s name a resonance of wholeness at the very point from which the voice proceeds.
shalem: Whole, complete, intact.
שָׁלֵם
The branch sharpens the contrast between the named wholeness of the source and the places that mourn and wither.
נְאוֹת
ne'ot
GROWS FROM
נוה
n-w-h
To dwell or settle; a dwelling place or pasture.
“habitations” in this verse is ne'ot. The Hebrew word can name both a habitation and a pasture. What mourns is not only the shepherd’s shelter but also the grazing ground that sustains the flock.
ALSO GROWS
naveh: A settled abode or a place for grazing.
נָוֶה
This branch shows how the shepherds’ ‘habitations’ can include the land that feeds their animals.
ne'ot: Plural dwelling places or pastures, as in Jeremiah 9:10.
נְאוֹת
Jeremiah also joins these places with lament, echoing Amos’s image of the shepherd country itself mourning.
THE PATTERN
The LORD’s voice reaches creation itself, shaking what is rooted and drying what looks alive.
The voice of the LORD shaketh the wilderness; the LORD shaketh the wilderness of Kadesh. The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: because the spirit of the LORD bloweth upon it: surely the people is grass.Whose voice then shook the earth: but now he hath promised, saying, Yet once more I shake not the earth only, but also heaven.THE THREAD
The LORD also shall roar out of Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem; and the heavens and the earth shall shake: but the LORD will be the hope of his people, and the strength of the children of Israel.Joel repeats the same roar from Zion and voice from Jerusalem, then says heaven and earth shake while the LORD is hope and strength to his people. That repeated language opens Amos’s mourning pasture and drying Carmel into a larger reach: the voice moves through the whole created order.
