What Does Colossians 3:3 Mean in the King James?
For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.
The analysis reads the King James wording.
King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
What looks like death is not the loss of your life; your life is hidden with Christ in God.
THE MEANING
You have died, yet your life is not gone: it is hidden with the Anointed One inside God. Its full shape may be out of sight, but its source and keeping are in God.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The verse undoes the belief that what is hidden has ceased to exist, or that an ending has left you with no life.
THE ROOT
κέκρυπται
kekryptai
GROWS FROM
κρύπτω (kryptō), stem κρυπ- (krypt-)
To hide or conceal.
“hid” in this verse is kekryptai. κέκρυπται (kekryptai, has been hidden) describes a concealment with an abiding result: the life is hidden and remains so. The word holds life out of sight with Christ in God, rather than suggesting that it has disappeared.
ALSO GROWS
kryptos: Hidden; secret.
κρυπτός
Matthew 6:6 uses this related form for the secret place where the Father sees what is hidden.
apokryptō: To conceal; hide away.
ἀποκρύπτω
This compound keeps the sense of concealment: what is hidden is out of sight, not therefore nonexistent.
ζωή
zōē
GROWS FROM
ζάω (zaō), verbal root ζω- (zō-)
To live.
The word for life belongs to a family that speaks of living and being made alive. The hidden life in this verse is held life, not an empty place left by death.
ALSO GROWS
zōopoieō: To make alive; give life.
ζωοποιέω
This related verb shows life as active and given, deepening the sense of a life that remains real even while hidden.
zōogoneō: To bring to life; preserve alive.
ζωογονέω
This branch joins life with its preservation, echoing the verse’s picture of life kept in God.
ἀπεθάνετε
apethanete
GROWS FROM
ἀποθνῄσκω (apothnēskō), stem θνησκ- (thnēsk-)
To die.
“dead” in this verse is apethanete. The Greek says “you died” in an event-form, while “your life has been hidden” describes a continuing result. The verse sets a completed death beside a life still held in God.
ALSO GROWS
thanatos: Death.
θάνατος
This noun names the death that frames the verse’s striking contrast with life.
synapothnēskō: To die with.
συναποθνῄσκω
This compound makes explicit the shared death with Christ that gives the verse’s “you died” its relational depth.
THE PATTERN
What is hidden from sight can remain fully present, guarded, and known in God.
For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion: in the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me; he shall set me up upon a rock. But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.THE THREAD
But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.Colossians uses κέκρυπται (kekryptai, has been hidden), while Matthew’s “in secret” is κρυπτῷ (kryptōi, hidden or secret), a form from the same Greek root. The shared word opens concealment into a state fully seen by the Father.
