This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

Two returns frame the verse, while the heart’s opposition exposes how arrival and allegiance can point in opposite directions.

A person can carry great riches while the heart remains set against the set-apart covenant. The repeated return frames the action, but outward return does not settle the heart’s direction.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

A successful return and great wealth prove the heart is aligned with the covenant. The verse places prosperity beside opposition, separating visible success from inner allegiance.

וְיָשֹׁב

wəyāšōḇ

GROWS FROM

שׁוּב

shuv

To turn back; to return.

“return” in this verse is wəyāšōḇ. The same root appears at both ends: first he returns to his land with great riches, then he returns again after his action. That repeated motion shows that coming home does not by itself mean restoration; the heart remains directed against the covenant.

ALSO GROWS

teshuvah: Return; turning back.

תְּשׁוּבָה

This branch keeps direction inside the idea of return: the verse’s two homecomings do not turn the heart toward the covenant.

yeshovev: He restores; brings back.

יְשׁוֹבֵב

This form appears in “He restoreth” (Psalm 23:3), linking the root with restoration; Daniel’s returns share the root, while the verse leaves the heart opposed.

Visible abundance, proximity, or speech can coexist with a heart turned in another direction.

But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.
1 Samuel 16:7 · KJVOutward appearance does not disclose the heart’s true orientation.
And they come unto thee as the people cometh, and they sit before thee as my people, and they hear thy words, but they will not do them: for with their mouth they shew much love, but their heart goeth after their covetousness.
Ezekiel 33:31 · KJVVisible closeness and words of love coexist with a heart directed elsewhere.
This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.
Matthew 15:8 · KJVThe verse distinguishes outward religious expression from the heart’s actual direction.
O Israel, return unto the LORD thy God; for thou hast fallen by thine iniquity.
Hosea 14:1 · KJV

The same Hebrew root ⁨שׁוּב⁩ (shuv), “turn back; return,” appears here for a return directed toward the LORD. Daniel’s repeated returns are directed toward the ruler’s land while his heart opposes the covenant, so the root makes the direction of return the revealing detail.
