What Does Daniel 2:33 Mean in the King James?
His legs of iron, his feet part of iron and part of clay.

THE KEY
The structure’s strength is already compromised at the very point where it must stand.
THE MEANING
Iron and clay occupy the same feet, but they remain different materials. A structure can carry visible strength and still be divided where it meets the ground. The fracture is built into its footing, not introduced from outside.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
This undoes the belief that strength in most of a structure makes the whole secure. Strength cannot make a divided foundation hold together.
THE ROOT
רַגְלֹוהִי
raglowhi
GROWS FROM
ר־ג־ל
Foot; the related verb carries the sense of going about on foot.
The Aramaic word for feet shares the ר־ג־ל root with Hebrew words for a foot and for going about or scouting. Feet are where a structure meets the ground and where its movement depends on that contact. Here, that footing is divided between iron and clay.
ALSO GROWS
regel: Foot
רֶגֶל
This Hebrew cognate makes the feet the image’s ground-contact, the place where its ability to stand is tested.
ragal: To go about; to scout
רָגַל
The related verb carries the sense of movement on foot, linking the image’s footing to its capacity to advance.
THE PATTERN
Strength in one part cannot stabilize a structure whose foundation does not hold together.
And whereas thou sawest iron mixed with miry clay, they shall mingle themselves with the seed of men: but they shall not cleave one to another, even as iron is not mixed with clay. And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.THE THREAD
He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings.Daniel’s Aramaic word for feet shares the ר־ג־ל root with the psalm’s Hebrew word for feet. The psalm places those feet on rock after the miry clay; beside it, Daniel’s mixed iron-and-clay footing becomes the point where the figure cannot securely stand.
