THE KEY
Their entry into the furnace begins with binding: the fire is the next stage of a violence already imposed on their bodies.
THE MEANING
This verse puts coercion at its most physical: the men are bound in their garments and thrown into the center of a burning furnace. Their clothing and restraints enter the fire with them; the violence is not abstract or distant. The scene makes their captivity visible before the flames can consume them.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie is that the furnace is where the violence begins; the verse shows it already underway in the binding.
THE ROOT
אֱסִרוּ
ʾĕsîrû
GROWS FROM
אסר
ʾ-s-r
To bind, tie, or restrain.
English can make “bound” sound like a logistical detail; the Aramaic root also grows into words for a captive and for confinement. Their captivity is enacted before the furnace receives them: the binding already places their bodies under another’s control.
ALSO GROWS
ʾāsîr: Prisoner, captive.
אָסִיר
This branch names the state the men’s restraints impose before they are thrown into the furnace.
maʾăsār: Imprisonment, confinement.
מַאֲסָר
This branch carries binding into a condition of restricted movement, linking the men’s physical restraint to captivity.
THE PATTERN
Violence can begin by constraining a body before it threatens that body with death.
And Joseph’s master took him, and put him into the prison, a place where the king’s prisoners were bound: and he was there in the prison.Such as sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, being bound in affliction and iron; Then the band and the captain and officers of the Jews took Jesus, and bound him,THE THREAD
He answered and said, Lo, I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire, and they have no hurt; and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God.Five verses later, the men are described as loose while they walk in the fire. The reversal leaves the violence of their binding intact while showing that the restraint no longer governs their movement.
