What Does Daniel 3:5 Mean in the King James?
That at what time ye hear the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, dulcimer, and all kinds of musick, ye fall down and worship the golden image that Nebuchadnezzar the king hath set up:

THE KEY
The music is the signal that turns a golden image into a command the whole body performs.
THE MEANING
The sound reaches you as a cue, and your body is expected to fall and bow before the image the king sets up. Music synchronizes the crowd into one visible act of allegiance. Worship here takes the form of a posture performed under public authority.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The belief that worship remains private collapses here: the king’s demand makes allegiance visible in the body’s posture.
THE ROOT
תִּסְגְּדוּן
tisgedun
GROWS FROM
סגד
sgd
to bow down or prostrate oneself
The root of “worship” names bowing down, placing the body in the center of the word’s action. The same root appears in the refusal to bow, making this posture the point where the king’s demand is either enacted or withheld.
ALSO GROWS
tisgedun: you bow down in worship
תִּסְגְּדוּן
The plural command makes the response collective and bodily.
nisgod: we bow down in worship
נִסְגֻּד
In Daniel 3:18, the refusal keeps this same action in view while withholding it.
תִּפְּלוּן
tippelun
GROWS FROM
נפל
naphal
to fall or drop down
The command does not move directly from hearing to bowing: it first says “fall down,” then “worship.” The paired verbs make submission an embodied sequence, lowering, then bowing before the image.
ALSO GROWS
tippelun: you fall down
תִּפְּלוּן
The command begins by directing the gathered bodies toward the ground.
yippel: he or anyone falls down
יִפֵּל
The same root in Daniel 3:6 makes falling the required first step before worship.
THE PATTERN
A public cue, whether song or decree, can gather bodies around an object of allegiance.
They have turned aside quickly out of the way which I commanded them: they have made them a molten calf, and have worshipped it, and have sacrificed thereunto, and said, These be thy gods, O Israel, which have brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.Praise him with the sound of the trumpet: praise him with the psaltery and harp. And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed.THE THREAD
But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up.The same Aramaic root, סגד, appears in both verses: here it names the commanded bow, and there the refused one. The bodily act itself becomes the boundary of the king’s authority.
