King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The word for setting officials in place carries the image of making them stand: the kingdom’s rule takes shape through the people established across it.
THE MEANING
A whole realm becomes governable through appointed stewards spread across it. Authority at the center reaches the whole kingdom through those placed in positions of responsibility. The verse shows governance as an arrangement carried by people.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The belief that a ruler governs a whole realm by personal authority alone gives way to a structure of appointed stewards.
THE ROOT
וַהֲקִים
wa-haqim
GROWS FROM
קום
q-w-m
to rise or stand; in the causative, to raise, establish, or set up
“set over” in this verse is wa-haqim. The Aramaic verb is a causative form of q-w-m: Darius establishes these officials in positions over the realm. The same root can describe people standing and a kingdom being established, joining the placement of stewards to the structure of rule.
ALSO GROWS
qam: stood, arose
קָם
This branch keeps the image of standing inside the act of appointing people to positions.
yəqîm: he will establish, set up
יְקִים
Daniel 2:44 uses this form for setting up a kingdom, linking appointed positions with the establishment of a realm.
מַלְכוּתָא
malkuta
GROWS FROM
מלך
m-l-k
to rule or reign; kingly rule
Malkuta grows from the root of king and reign, keeping active rule inside the word “kingdom.” Here, that rule reaches across the realm through the stewards appointed over it.
ALSO GROWS
melekh: king
מֶלֶךְ
The ruler and the realm share the same root, tying the kingdom to the one who governs it.
malakh: to reign
מָלַךְ
This verbal branch makes the kingdom more than territory: it is the sphere in which ruling takes place.
THE PATTERN
A whole realm or community is ordered through people assigned responsibility within it.
Moreover thou shalt provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, and rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens:Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business.THE THREAD
And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever. The Aramaic verb translated “set over” in Daniel 6:1 and “set up” in Daniel 2:44 comes from the same root, קום (q-w-m), meaning to stand or establish. One verse uses it for placing stewards over a realm; the other uses it for establishing a kingdom.
